Filipino students bag 97 medals at 2018 World Mathematics Invitational

Filipino students from kindergarten to senior high school bagged 97 medals – 21 gold,
41 silver and 35 bronze – on top of 14 merit awards at the 2018 World Mathematics Invitational
(WMI), according to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Asian MathSci League, Inc.
(AMSLI Philippines). The competition, which was held in South Korea from July 13 to 17,
attraced 1,100 students from several countries – South Korea, Bulgaria, Cambodia, China,
Hong Kong, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nigeria, Singapore,
Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States, Vietnam, and the Philippines. The awards
ceremony, held at the Grand Peace Hall of Kyung Hee University, was attended by Consul
General Christian De Jesus of the Philippine Embassy in South Korea. Wesley Gavin Palomar,
a grade 8 student at the Philippine Science High School-Main Campus, received the Star of the
World Cup for topping his grade level. Reiona Ckyle Mundala, a grade 7 student at the Lipa City
Science Integrated National High School, won the Bronze Award for her WMI Mini Math
Creative Video about the Pythagorean Theorem.

Filipinos are indeed very smart people. In order to further develop the skills of these
people who are blessed with beautiful minds, we should train them to become the future leaders
of our country. These people are the pride of our country in the field of brains. That is why I
agree that we should participate in different international competitions, so that our country, the
Philippines would not be always known as a corrupted society. We are given by the Almighty
Father lots of blessings, so we shouldn’t waste these on useless things, but for the development
of the Philippines.
