RELATIONS

Effective industrial relations is a function of effective communication. In


other words the manner in which managers manage or handle
communication in industrial relations matters will determine to a very large
extent the state of industrial relations in their organizations. In industry,
communication transmits orders for work, assist in doing the work such as
buying raw materials, advertising and selling our finished products. It is also
the means for hiring, promoting, firing, appraising and motivating
employees. The ability to communicate effectively is the characteristic
managers consider most critical in ensuring a sound and effective industrial
relations.

Upon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:


 Understand the general principles and concepts underlying interpersonal
and organizational communication
 Gain an understanding of the skills required for effective interpersonal
communication
 Appreciate the importance of effective communication in industrial
relations
 Analyse communication between people so as to understand how people
speak or write, and why sometimes a particular way of speaking or
writing results in anger, quarrels, and disagreement on one hand, and
fun, agreement and cooperation on the other
 Develop effective communication skills
