[1.] aataa sadguru varnavenaa | jethe maayaa sparsho sakena | te swaroopa maja agnyanaa kaya
kale |

1. Now, for the "True Master" the Sadguru who cannot be described. He is that "True Form"
(Swaroopa) where Illusion cannot reach. How can an ignorant one like me ever know Him?

[2.] Na kale na kale neti neti | aise bolatase shrutee | Tethe maja murkhaachee matee | pavaadela
kothe |

2. Where the Knowledge of Vedas falls short saying "Not this, not this" (Neti, neti), how can the
foolish intellect describe or know him?

[3.] Maja na kale haa vichaaru | durhuni maza namaskaaru | Gurudevaa pailapaaru | paavavee
maja |

3. It is not possible to comprehend Him in thought. I salute you from a distance, Oh Lord Guru
(Gurudeva)! Reach out to bring me across the ocean of worldly life.

[4.] Hotee stavanaachee duraashaa | tutalaa maayechaa bharavasaa | Aataa asaala taise asaa |

4. There was a false hope of praising you, but the confidence in Illusion to be able to describe you is
broken. You are ever as you are, oh Sadguru.

[5.] Maayechyaa bale kareena stavana | aise vaanchhita hote mana | Maayaa zaalee
lajyaayamaana | kaaya karu |

5. Because of the strength of Illusion (Maya), the mind was hoping to praise you, but Illusion herself
became shy. What can I do?

[6.] Naatude mukhya paramatma | mhanoni karaavee laage pratimaa | Taisaa maayaayoge
mahimaa | varneena sadguruchaa |

6. Because the Supreme Self (Paramatma) itself cannot be known, imagery is used. Like that, with the
help of Illusion I shall try to describe the greatness of the True Master.

[7.] Aapalyaa bhaavaasaarikhaa manee | deva aathavaavaa dhyaanee | Taisaa sadguru haa
stavanee | staavu aataa |

7. With great feeling one should remember God in meditation. In the same way, I shall praise the
Sadguru now.

[8.] Jayajayaaji sadgururaajaa | vishvambharaa vishavabheeja | Paramapurushaa mokshadvajaa|


deenabandhu |

8. Jai! Jai! Praises to the King of Gurus. You are the One who has filled this Universe, and you are the
seed of the Universe. You are the Great Original Being (ParamaPurusha), the flag indicating
liberation, and the brother of the downtrodden.

[9.] Tuzeeyena abhayankare | anaavara maayaa he vosare | Jaise suryaprakaashe andhaare |


palona jaaye |

9. Because of you, the overwhelming Illusion disappears in the same way that darkness disappears in
the presence of sunlight.

[10.] Aaditye andhhakaara nivaare | parantu maagute bhrahmaanda bhare | Nishee jaaliyaa
nantare | punhaa kalokha |

10. The sun dispels the darkness, but afterwards at night, the universe is again filled with darkness.

[11] Taisa navhe swamiraava | karee janmamrutya vaava | Samoola agnyanaachaa thaava |
pusuna taaki |

11. The Sadguru is not like that. He destroys the cycle of birth and death by completely uprooting
Ignorance.

[12.] Suvarnaache loha kaahee | sarvathaa honaara naahee | Taisaa gurudaasa sandehee |
padochi nene sarvathaa |

12. Gold can be never transformed into iron. In same way, one who is a servant of the Guru will
never again fall into doubt.

[13.] Kaa saritaa gangasee milaalee | milanee hotaa gangaa jaalee | Maga jaree vegalee kelee |
taree honaara naahee sarvathaa |

13. If a river merges with the Ganges (the sacred river Ganga) it becomes the Ganges itself. Even if
one were to try to separate it, it cannot be done.

[14] Paree te saritaa milaneemaage | vaahaala maanijeta jaage | Taisa navhe shishyaa vege |
swameecha hoye |

14. Before it joins with the Ganges, the river is known by the world as a small separate stream.
However it is not like that in the case of the disciple of the Sadguru. He does not remain separate,
but immediately becomes the Master himself.

[15.] Pareesa aapanaa aise kareenaa | suvarne lohe paalatenaa | Upadesha karee bahuta janaa |
ankita sadguruchaa |

15. The Philosopher’s Stone is said to transform iron into gold, but does not change it into a stone
like itself, and gold cannot turn iron into gold. However, with the teachings of the Sadguru, the
disciple is able to give the teachings to many people.

[16.] Shishyaasa gurutva praapta hoye | suvarne suvarna karitaa naye | Mhanoni upamaa na saahe
| sadgurusee parisaachee |

16. The disciple becomes the same as the Guru while the transformed gold cannot turn iron into
gold, therefore, the simile of the philosopher’s stone is not really applicable to the Sadguru.

[17.] Upame dyaavaa saagara | taree to atyantachi kshaara | Athavaa mhano ksheerasaagara |
taree to naasela kalpaantee |

17. The comparison of the Ocean is given, but the ocean it is very salty. Even if you call it an Ocean of
Sweetness, it will eventually be destroyed with the final destruction of the world.

[18.] Upame dyaava jaree meru | taree to jada paashaana kathoru | Taisaa navhe kee sadguru |
komaala deenaachaa |

18. The comparison with the mountain Meru is used, but that mountain is heavy and hard stone. The
Sadguru is not like that at all, as he is soft and compassionate towards the miserable.

[19.] Upame mhano gagana | taree gaganaapareesa te nirguna | Ya kaara drishtanta heena |
sadguru gaganaachaa |

19. The comparison is made with the sky, yet the sky has attributes and the Sadguru is without
attributes (Nirguna), so this simile also falls short.

[20.] Dheerapane upamu jagatee | taree hehi khachela kalpaantee | Mhanonidheeratvaasa


drashtaantee | heena vasundharaa |

20. With courage the comparison is made with the solidness of the earth, yet the earth will also be
destroyed at the final destruction. Therefore, the comparison with the earth is not appropriate.

[21.] Aataa upamaavaa gabhastee | gabhasteechaa prakaasha kitee | Shastre maryaadaa bolatee |
sadguru amaryaada |

21. Now, if the comparison is made of the Sadguru to the sun, then science will tell us the sun has
limits to its light, but the Sadguru is limitless.

[22.] Mhanonee upame unaa dinakara | sadguru gnyaanapraksaha thora | Aataa upamaavaa
phanivara | taree tohi bhaaravaahi |

22. Therefore, comparison of the Sadguru to the Sun falls short. His "Light of Knowledge" is vast. The
Sadguru cannot even be compared with Shesha, the great serpent of legend, because Shesha carries
the burden of the world, while the Sadguru removes the burden of the world.

[23.] Aataa upame dyaave jala | taree te kaalaantaree aatela sakala | Sadguru swaroopa te
nishchala | jaanaara naahee |

23. The comparison with water is given, but water will dry up at the time of the final dissolution,
while the Sadguru is everlasting. He will never be destroyed.

[24.] Sadgurusee upamaave amruta | taree amara dharitee mrutyupantha | Sadgurukrupaa


yathaartha | amarachi karee |

24. The Sadguru is compared with the Nectar of Immortality, yet even the Gods who consume nectar
will eventually die, while one becomes truly immortal with the blessings of the Sadguru.

[25.] Sadgurusee mhanaave kalpataru | taree ha kalpaneteeta vichaaru | Kalpavrikshaachaa
angikaaru | kona karee |

25. The Sadguru is compared to Kalpataru, the wish-fulfilling tree, yet the Sadguru takes one beyond
all desires, so who will accept such a comparison?

[26.] Chintaa maatra naahee manee | kona puse chintaamanee | Kaamadhenuchee dubhanee |
nikkaamaasee na laagatee |

26. The Sadguru does not leave any worries in the mind. When there is no worry in the mind, who
will bother with Chintamani, the mythical stone that removes worries, and why does one without
desires have any need to drink the milk of Kamadhenu, the wish-fulfilling cow?

[27.] Sadguru mhano lakshmeevanta | taree te lakshmee nashivanta | Jyaache dvaaraa ase
tishthata | mokshalakshmee |

27. The Sadguru is compared with great wealth, yet wealth is destructible, while at His doorstep
stands the great wealth of liberation.

[28.] Swargaloka indra sampatee | he kaalaantaree vitambatee | Sadgurukrupechee praptee |


kaalaantaree chalenaa |

28. The kingdom of heaven, and even Indra, the King of Gods, get destroyed at the end of some
period of time (Kalpa). However, when one receives the blessing of the Sadguru, that never gets
destroyed by time.

[30.] Tayaasee upamaa kaaya dhyaavee | naashivanta srushtee aaghavee | Panchabhootika


uttaathevee | Na chale tethe |

30. What label can one give to Him? The whole of creation is destructible, so not even the entire play
of the Five Elements works as a comparison.

[31.] Mhononee sadguru varnavenaa | he ge hechi maazee varnanaa | Antarasthiteecheeyaa


khunaa | antarnishtha jaanaatee |

31. Truly the Sadguru cannot be described. This is only my description. The indications of His Inner-
State are known only by those who are devoted to the Inner-Self.

Iti shree dasabodhe guru-shishya sauvaade Sadgurustavananaama samaasa chauthaa

Thus in Dasbodh, a dialogue between the Guru and disciple, Subchapter 4 of Chapter 1, named "In
Praise of the Sadguru" ends.
