COURSE SYLLABUS
A. COURSE DESCRIPTION
Hokkien 1 is an elective course open to students interested to learn this dialect of Fujian
Province, PROC, the place of origin of the majority of the Chinese in Southeast Asia. It is
widely spoken among the Chinese-Filipinos and therefore is useful for business relations with
them. This course is taught using English as primary medium of instruction. It is designed for
students without background in the dialect.
B. LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of the semester students are expected to (1) understand the origins of Hokkien and its
relevance in modern day Chinese-Filipino community; (2) have significantly increased their
knowledge of Hokkien from zero to some background; (3) be able to introduce themselves and
converse lightly using Hokkien in everyday conversations; (4) be able to use and apply idiomatic
expressions in Hokkien ; (5) have further understanding of Hokkien and Chinese-Filipino culture.

E. COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Short tests will be given in the form of written exams which will include Hokkien listening,
reading and writing comprehension.
Oral examinations will require students to give presentations or participate in role playing
activities. These will include, but are not limited to telling stories and singing in Hokkien.
Homework will be given to students from time to time to practice their Hokkien listening and
speaking skills and comprehension.
Attendance and class participation are essential for students to be able to practice their Hokkien
speaking and listening skills in the classroom setting. Attendance is obviously a necessary
condition for students to be able to participate during class lectures and discussions.
