A. COURSE DESCRIPTION
Hokkien 1 is an elective course open to students interested to learn this dialect of Fujian Province, PROC,
the place of origin of the majority of the Chinese in Southeast Asia. It is widely spoken among the Chinese-
Filipinos and therefore is useful for business relations with them. This course is taught using English as
primary medium of instruction. It is designed for students without background in the dialect.

B. COURSE OBJECTIVES
1. Communications
I. To pronounce Hokkien words correctly
II. To be able to speak and listen to Hokkien
III. To provide students with a deeper exposure to and appreciation for Chinese dialect and Chinese
traditional culture

2. Connections
I. To carry out simple day to day e-conversations
II. To carry out e-conversations on broader range of topics
III. To be able to utilize Hokkien idiomatic expressions
3. Culture
I. To apply the knowledge of Hokkien culture in various social contexts
II. Be able to apply courtesy expression in Hokkien wiith proper understanding of the expression used
III. To help students understand the basic nuances of the Chinese language and how these reflect certain
aspects of Chinese culture

4. Comparisons
I. To be able to use simple words and phrases to express themselves.
II. Able to understand simple Hokkien.

5. Community
I. To understand the differences between cultural stereotypes and generalization

6. Critical thinking
I. To understand Hokkien E-Communications and culture, eventually evaluate its relationship to Philippine
perspectives and subsequently find solutions to problems.

C. COURSE OUTLINE
Hokkien phonetic system will be introduced and some simple daily conversations along with some basic
topics will be introduced and practiced. Media technology will be one of the medium used in the learning
process.

F. COURSE REQUIREMENTS
The final grade will be based on the following:
Classroom Performance: Participation 30%
Student Output: Output of each Unit 5x10% = 50%
Final 20%
Total 100%

G. GRADING SYSTEM
1. Individual class participation & attendance 20%
2. Assigned tasks (reflection paper, voice recording and the like) 20%
3. Presentation 20%
4. Mid-term 20%

A 95 Above B+ 90 – 94 B 85 – 89 C+ 80 - 84
C 75–79 D 70–74 F Below 69

1. A student who arrives five (5) minutes after the second bell rings is considered late. Two (2) recorded
tardiness is considered an absence.
2. No special quizzes or make-up tests will be given to those who missed them due to tardiness or cuts,
except in case of long absence due to illness. See Magna Carta
3. Cellular phones seen and/or heard during class hours will be confiscated.
4. Eating and drinking inside the classroom during class hours are not allowed.
5. Homework/papers submitted late will not be accepted.

Guidelines for individual minor work:


1. Seven minor works are required to be submitted after the conclusion of every unit discussed.
Papers are due by 9 A.M., on the specific date announced to be due. In addition to submission of
hard copies in class, students are expected to submit soft copies by email no later than 11:59 P.M. of
the same day when the hard copies are due. Acceptable formats include .doc, .pdf. Submission of
the hard copy without the soft copy, or vice versa, is an incomplete submission, subject to
corresponding grade point deductions. Late submissions will never have A.
2. The professor reserves the right to require students to present their minor works in class.
3. Submit both hard copy and soft copy of the required oral report/reflection papers etc. with Proper
citation, bibliography (APA format).
