Milestone 2 Example
The Driving question of my exhibition is: Do monkeys make good pets?

1. Taking care of a monkey requires a great deal of commitment.

a. How long do monkeys live?
A monkey’s life span can range anywhere from 15-30 years. If one were to have a monkey,
they would need to be prepared to take care of it for a very long time.
b. Monkeys need a large amount of social interaction and attention from their owner. Because
of this fact, it is difficult to vacation or do regular day-to-day responsibilities.
c. Monkeys need exercise. If you do not want your house to be a mess, you have to give it time
to play.

2. Monkeys can become a financial burden (expensive).

a. A wide range of diseases can be passed down from monkeys, including Hepatitis B and
Malaria. This can cause a high amount of medical or veterinary bills.
b. Most states require a federal license to own a pet monkey. The license is expensive. States
also do inspections to make sure you are taking care of your monkey. If you don’t take care of
it, the state will fine you money.
c. Monkeys do not eat regular food. The cost of giving a monkey its special diet will run you a
high bill.
3. Depriving a pet monkey of normal social relationships and environment can create
behavior problems.
a. Monkeys are designed to jump and swing in a jungle habitat. They will become bored and
unhappy if confined to a cage and will often act out their unhappiness with aggression.
b. Monkeys have complex emotional needs. They want time with other monkeys and can
become mean or hurt themselves if they do not have that time.
c. Monkeys do not like new people, including children and spouses. It is important to make
sure that a monkey does not harm anyone it does not like. You must always watch it and keep
others safe.
