1. The functions f and g are defined by f ( x ) ↦ ( x+1 )2 +2 and g ( x )= respectively.
x −2
a) Determine the domain and the range of
i. f
ii. g
b) Find g ∘ f and determine its domain.
2. The functions f and g are defined by f ( x )= √ 25−x 2and g ( x )=x 2−5 respectively.
a) Determine the domain and the range of
i. f
ii. g
b) Explain why the composite function f ∘ g does not exist.
c) Determine the set of values of x for which f ∘ g is defined.
4. The functions g and h are defined by g ( x )=ln ( 2−x ) , x <2 and h ( x )=√ 3−x ,
−1< x ≤ 3 .
a) Sketch the graph of g and explain why g−1 exists. Hence, determine g−1 and
state its domain. State also the geometrical relation between g and g−1 .
b) Find the composite function g ∘h and state its domain and range.
c) Express √ 3−ln (3−x) as a composition of functions which involves g and h.
7. ( x−2) is a factor of p ( x ) =qx 3−rx 2 + x−2 and p(x ) has a remainder of 12 when it is
divided by ( x +1). Find the values of q∧r.
12. Find the values of x in terms of c which satisfy the equation 2 log c x −3 log x c=5
16. Express 4 sin θ−3 cos θ in the form r sin ( θ−α ) , where r >0 and 0∘ <α <90o . Hence,
solve the equation 4 sin θ−3 cos θ=3for 0 o< θ<360o
