CHAPTER 1
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Philippines is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire and close to the equator that makes the country
prone to earthquakes and typhoons. In addition, the country is surrounded by large bodies of
water and facing the Pacific Ocean where 60% of the world's typhoons are made. This causes the
Philippines to be the first country to get hit by a newly formed typhoon, which results into great
Landslides, one of the natural hazards which is very common in places close to high
areas. This include movement downslopes of any rock masses. Occurrences of landslides are
commonly caused by highly concentrated gravitational force and other types of stresses that
exceeds the strength capacity of a land mass which may result to a disaster.
This study aims to develop a preventive plan that will minimize the damage that could be
done by a landslide. San Pedro, Laguna have numerous places that are in such high areas, one of
these places is PEA-2A in Barangay Langgam. This plan includes a way, called “slope
vegetation” which will minimize the possible severity of landslides; it also includes building or
creation of a firm wall that will provide protection for the residents from a possible damage of

landslides, it will also lessen the damage received from a landslide. This study will
become more ready and secure of landslides effect and the disasters that it may bring into those
areas.
This study aims to develop a preventive plan against possible landslide in PEA 2A. It will
2. What will be the effect of landslide to the lives of the residence living there?
The focus of this study is to develop a preventive plan that will help the residence if
PEA-2A prevent the damage from landslide that may occur from time to time.
It delimits that the study will not be generalized to those other hazards besides landslides
and those who does not live in the area and those people who are not in risk.

RESIDENCE – The study can help the residence of PEA 2A to ensure their safety living there
and eliminate their fears and anxiety of their homes getting destroyed whenever a landslide
occurs. This study will also provide residence the assurance of being protected against future
landslides.
BARANGAY OFFICIALS – The outcomes of this study can provide assurance of safety of the
residence living in the proximity of the barangay. It will also give them future ideas that can
improve the original plan and may increase the safety rate of the residents.
FUTURE RESEARCHERS – the results may be beneficial to them as they conduct a deeper
research about landslides. It will also serve as one of the possible related studies and could get

The following terminologies will be seen throughout the process of conducting
this research:
LANDSLIDE – a large mass of rocks and earth that suddenly and quickly moves down the side
SOIL – is a mixture of organic matter, minerals, gases, liquids and organisms that support life.
The porous medium that has developed in the uppermost layer of Earth’s crust.
EROSION – is the action of surface processes that removes soil, rock, or dissolved material
from one location on the Earth’s crust and then transport it to another location.
WEATHERING – is the breakdown of rocks at the Earth’s surface, by the action of rainwater,
SLOPE – it is the side of a mountain. It is usually the cause for landslides as its landmasses only
moved downward.
HAZARD – is any agent that can cause harm of damage to humans, property or the
general term, without specific structure, spatial extent or any other specific botanical or
geographic characteristics.
