Dr.

May Marie Talandron-Felipe presents the ICCE 2019 Best Paper on the
International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Education 2020

ICCE 2019 Best Paper Awardee, Dr. May Marie P. Talandron-Felipe, presented the winning paper
entitled “Leveraging LSTM in the fine-grained analysis of the Incubation Effect in Physics Playground”,
co-authored by Dr. Ma. Mercedes T. Rodrigo, in the 21st International Conference on Artificial
Intelligence in Education (AIED) last July 8, 2020. Asia Pacific Society for Computers in Education
(APSCE), the parent society of ICCE, and the International AIED Society are both members of the
International Alliance to Advance Learning in the Digital Era (IAALDE). The major goal of IAALDE is to
promote the exchange of knowledge across societies on the inter-relationships of learning and
technology by supporting and providing funds to best paper authors to present the winning paper to a
sister conference.

Dr. Talandron-Felipe gave a virtual presentation and discussed the phenomenon called incubation effect
(IE) in the context of students playing an educational game called Physics Playground. She explained the
3 phases of IE: a) pre-incubation (when a student gets stuck in a problem solving activity), b) incubation
(when the student takes a break), and c) post-incubation (when the student goes back to the problem
and successfully solves it). Their study found features that contribute to the incidence of IE and
recommended that these could be translated into mechanics in educational games.

Aside from Dr. Talandron-Felipe from ICCE 2019, other best paper awardees from the ACM Conference
on Learning @ Scale 2019 and International Conference on Learning Analytics & Knowledge (LAK) 2020
also presented during the Alliance Best Paper Session in AIED 2020.
