Uses of Sildenafil

 Erectile dysfunction for men

 Pulmonary arterial hypertension
 MOA: Sildenafil blocks phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5), an enzyme that promotes
breakdown of cGMP. It regulates blood flow through the genital area but needs to be in
combination to sexual arousal for it to work. It also causes dilation of blood vessels in the
lungs.
Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors have been used to treat erectile dysfunction, but due
to the similarities of male and female sexual response, many studies have focus on using
sildenafil to treat patients with female sexual dysfunction (FSD). However, many studies
concluded that sildenafil is not an effective treatment for patients with FSD. This is
mainly due to the lack of knowledge and understanding of FSD. Much of the studies
shows that there is not much significance from the placebo group vs to the group who got
the actual medication.
