A physical law that gives the pressure drop in an

incompressible and Newtonian fluid in laminar
flow flowing through a long cylindrical pipe of
constant cross section
MAJOR HEAD LOSSES IN PIPES

R= A/P
R = hydraulic radius
A = area of water in pipe
P = perimeter in contact with water
S = Slope of hydraulic gradient
THEORIES
Sample Problem 1
A series arrangement for a horizontal pipeline is shown with
details of each pipe in the table. The pressure head at point A is
𝑚3
300m and the discharge through the system is 0.197 . The
𝑠
V2C
energy loss at the contraction BC is given as 0.2 and the energy
2g
(VC −VE )2
loss at the expansion DE is .
2g

b. Calculate the elevation of the energy gradient at D
c. Calculate the elevation of the energy gradient at F
Sample Problem 2
A pipe network consists of pipeline 1 from A to B,
then at B it is connected to pipelines 2 and 3, where it
merges again at joint C to form a single pipeline 4 up
to point D. Pipelines 1, 2 and 4 are in series
connection whereas pipelines 2 and 3 are in parallel
to each other. If the rate of flow from A to B is 10
liters/sec and assuming f = 0.03 for all pipes,
determine the flow in each pipe and the total head
lost from A to D.
Sample Problem 3
The system of pipes in the figure
consists of 55mm diameter
wrought iron pipes containing
water. If the total flow rate from 1
to 2 is 12 L/sec and neglecting
minor losses.
a. Compute the flow rate of pipe B
b. Compute the flow rate of pipe A
c. Compute the pressure drop
from 1 to 2
Seatwork 1
The total head loss from A to E as shown is 30m. Use friction
factor, f = 0.02 in all pipes.
a. Find the discharge at line 2
b. Find the discharge at line 1
c. Find the discharge at line 4
Seatwork 2
Three pipes are connected in parallel as shown in the figure.
their characteristics are as follows:
Determine the discharge in each of the pipes if the total flow
rate is 0.80 m3/s.
Seatwork 3
Water is flowing at the rate of 300 L/sec from A to E as shown
in the figure. Compute the flow in each pipe in L/sec and the
total head loss. Assume f = 0.025 for all pipes.
