8 LANGUAGE ARTS - TERM 1


Unit One: Global Citizenship

The focus of our first unit of study is for students to consider various global issues and what it means to be a global citizen.
We will explore various topics including (but not limited to) how individuals can make a difference in the world;
issues surrounding money and trade; industrialization; world population; child labour; and peacemaking.

Reading Focus
This unit will focus on:
 - Making Connections
 - Asking Questions
 - Developing and Expressing Opinions about Texts

Online Lit Circles (This is new, books may vary depending on availability)
Using small groups, and a variety of novels, students will participate in a lit circle online with their peers.
Lit circles give students the opportunity to talk meaningfully about books, where they prepare the questions
and guide their discussion. It also allows them to take responsibility for developing a reading plan as a group,
and ensuring they adhere to their plan. Some of the novels used for this lit circle will be:

1) Walking Home by Eric Walters


2) Shaken by Eric Walters
3) Wave by Eric Walters
4) Alexandria of Africa by Eric Walters
5) Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere by Julie Lamana
Writing Focus
This unit will focus on:
 - Developing Ideas
 - Organization of Ideas

Oral Communication Focus


This unit will focus on
 - how to, and strategies to improve, effective listening

Media Literacy Focus


This unit will focus on:
 - Purpose and Audience in Media Texts
 - Developing and Expressing Opinions about Media Texts
