SCHLUMBERGER SOFTWARE INTEGRATED SOLUTIONS NEWSLETTER

MAY 2020
Dear Respected Users,
With this newsletter, we would like to highlight some fascinating articles exclusively for you. This edition will start off with
Symmetry: Symmetry Excel Add-In. This add-in provides tools to easily extract information from Symmetry cases. It also
allows to drive simulation from Excel and interact with Symmetry cases without having to open Symmetry or having to write any
lines of code. The add-in allows easy creation of tables and templates that can be reused with simulation cases that contain
similar models.

APPLICATIONS Background Case

We are aware that Symmetry has “Separator Sizing” capability, but most
of the time, the data still need to be extract for custom sizing according to
the vendor or client preference.

SYMMETRY EXCEL ADD-IN PROCEDURE

As mentioned before, within this newsletter we would like to do separator sizing using our own excel file. The excel file will be
provided in the attachment. Below are the procedure to install the add-in to your excel, link with your Symmetry case and adding
variables (import and/ or export) to you spreadsheet.

1. Installing the add-in

a. Open the Excel file (“Separator Sizing Symmetry.xlsx”) and go to File > Account > About Excel. Take a note about your
Excel version, 32-bit or 64-bit.

b. Open Excel and go to File > Options > Add-ins > Manage Excel Add-Ins > Go…..
c. From the add-ins window click Browse. Go to the Excel Add-In folder located in the installation folder
C:\Program Files (x86)\VMG\Symmetry\UI
Select the file VMGLink-AddIn.xll, and then click OK to load the file.
d. After load the file, the new add-in will appear on the list. Check the VMG Add-in box and then click OK.

e. After successfully load the add-in, you will found new Symmetry tab on your Excel main tab.

2. Activating the link

a. When starting a new instance of Excel, the link starts in its inactive state. Inactive means that there is not a Symmetry case
loaded in the background. The options that are not available in this state appear disabled.

b. To activate the link, select a simulation case. Go to Symmetry menu and click “Select
Simulation Case...”. In this case, select “Separator Sizing.vsym”. It may takes several
second to load the case.
c. After loading the simulation case, the link becomes active and the status icon changes
to a green checkmark. And the rest of the add-in features become active.
d. Explore the Symmetry menu, this menu contains items that are related to the simulation
case.
i. Select simulation case: used to select the simulation case
ii. Reload case: reloads the current simulation case. Useful when the linked
simulation case has been modified with exported values and a fresh starts
is required.
iii. Save linked simulation case as: to save the linked simulation case.
iv. Application visible: the Symmetry application will appear and visible.
v. Shut down simulation engine: shutdowns the simulation engine. Resets
the link to its inactive state.
vi. Link validation report: runs the validation report and shows the detailed
report.
vii.Settings: shows the settings window.
viii.About: shows the about window.

3. Configuring variables

Now we are going to connect the Symmetry case with our spreadsheet by adding variables.
a. Take a note that we are going to use the Page 1 sheet. In that excel, there are several yellow box that needs to be filled by
user, and in this case we are going to make it came from Symmetry case.

3. Configuring variables

b. First, we’re going to extract gas rate information from Symmetry and link it to the spreadsheet. To create a new variables list
click on the blank D10 cell > go to Variables List > New.
c. It will open “Variable List Configuration” window > click “Browse...” button to open the browsing interface.

d. Double click at /S1 as your unit operations (it means you will extract the information from the S1 material stream).
e. Move to the “Variables Tab”, choose Out > Fluid > Bulk.
f. On the “Selected Items” column discard all the unnecessary variables by click “<<“ button.

g. Go to “Available Items” and double click on P, it will moved to the Selected Items column. And then click OK button located
at right corner.
h. You will now found the variable at the list. You can change the units by clicking at the unit dropdown button. If you look at
the excel the Pressure unit is in psig, so change the unit on the Display Units dropdown list. Click OK and the Pressure val-
ue will be populated to the cell.

3. Configuring variables

i. Another way to add the variables are:

 Load from clipboard. To make it more relatable, we’re going to extract Temperature from the Symmetry Case.
Open the Symmetry case go to Symmetry > click on Symmetry Visible, your Symmetry case will be open.
At the Symmetry case double click at S1 Material Stream > right click at Temperature > choose Copy Path.
Open the excel, go to Variable List > New, the variable that you copied before will appear in the list.

 Manually from the configuration window. We’re going to extract the next variable needed which is Gas FLow Rate from
the Symmetry Case.
The variables paths can be typed directly in the variable path column. If the link is active, and the variable is found, the
available units will be loaded.

j. To update the Links in case you made some change in the Symmetry case, you can update all in one time using All button,
or to update individual links go to Variables List > Update.

k. When you want to close the excel sheet, and you’re Symmetry case is visible, make sure the case is closed first before
closing the excel file.

COMPLETE DATA AND RESULTS

After completing all the input data needed for separator sizing, your excel sheet will look like picture below, or you can look at
“Separator Sizing Symmetry_Complete.xls”. As per calculated by this excel sheet, you need to do trial and error with the vessel
dimension to meet the adequate separator size. For additional information, this excel sheet used only as example of one of the
separator sizing method. Every company or vendor has their own specification.

Additional information, Symmetry has its own separator sizing calculation in the background using Wayne D. Monnery and
William Y. Svrcek method (k factor is calculated using York-Demister equation). You can take the results from Symmetry into
your consideration as well, but noted here because the method is not exactly the same so you will not get the exact same re-
sults.
