Post-Emergency Response

(Rehabilitation & Reconstruction)

After the conclusion of emergency relief during and immediately after the floods, J.A.W.A.N has been focusing its
energies on rehabilitative activities over the past few months.

Some of the activities being carried out currently and planned in the near future are.

Reconstruction/Rehabilitation (Sarki)

Sarki is located in the district Alipur, almost at the adjoining point of River Indus and River Chenab, thus making it,
by far, one of the worst affected areas by the floods. Entire houses were washed away in this area and the land
remained under water for months. Almost all the people residing in this area either completely lost their
livelihoods as well as their property or were left with little to nothing. After identification of this neglected area,
J.A.W.A.N went ahead to provide relief to the area. In this regard, the plans already initiated and the ones in
pipeline are as under.

1. Construction of first 5 houses started on the 7th of January and was completed by the 22nd of January.
These houses have been formally inaugurated and handed over to the neediest of families after careful
identification.
2. Construction of 5 more houses started on the 12th of January and is expected to finish by 27th of January.
3. Construction of 12 more houses has also started in the same locality and they are expected to be ready
before the second week of February.
4. J.A.W.A.N plans to construct 80 houses initially for the neediest families.
5. Water filtration plant: J.A.W.A.N will also be installing a water filtration plant sufficient for catering to a
population of 10,000 in the Sarki area. The water filtration plant has been generously donated by KSB
pumps.

Owing to the dire conditions and the overall neglect towards this area, there is a strong need to upscale the
rehabilitation activity here. A lot more houses are required here to help these people weather the effects of the
harsh climate and provide them with economic relief. Extensive community level relief and uplifting is required
here to give the people of this area a surviving chance. With J.A.W.A.N working here already, a platform for quick
and effective rehabilitation is very much possible.
Community Uplifting

While the emphasis stays on flood relief activities, J.A.W.A.N has also started contributing in general community
uplifting activities at various levels. Some of the recent and future activities include.

1. J.A.W.A.N helped with the repair of a large scale tube-well in Koray, one of the worst war-struck and
impoverished areas of Swat. After the repair, running water to almost 1,000 households has been made
available in the area.
2. J.A.W.A.N will be installing necessary electronic equipment to run another tube-well in Shokdara area of
Swat by mid-February, where running water will be made available to more than 2,000 households.
3. After installation in Shokdara, feasibility for installing necessary equipment will be carried out at a similar
tube-well in Chuprial area, which will potentially provide running water to more than 2,500 households at
least.

Education

As most of the J.A.W.A.N members have been engaged in community level education related activities in various
capacities in the past, therefore, we have a strong inclination towards returning to our roots and carrying out
education related activities.

1. J.A.W.A.N has pledged partial financial support to help an exceptional student coming from a very poor
background finish his higher education in Peshawar. This will be done in collaboration with the student
welfare society at GIKI, Project Topi.
2. A number of schooling projects in Swat area as well as South Punjab are under consideration. A model
school is under consideration in Sarki area as well.

Highlights of some of the other key activities carried out in the recent past are as under.

Temporary Shelter

Massive infrastructure loss due to the floods left a score of people without proper shelter. Keeping this in mind,
some of the most worst affected areas were targeted in this regard with the aim to provide temporary shelter for
the time being.

1. J.A.W.A.N supported 100 families with tents in the flood struck areas of Dera Din Panah in coordination
with our friends, the Din Panah Foundation. (Last week of September,2010)
2. J.A.W.A.N arranged for 100 family sized tents for the residents of Bait Bhutto and Bait Baloch, two of the
worst affected areas in Liaqatpur along river Chenab. (October 2, 2010)
3. J.A.W.A.N distributed another 100 tents coupled with 100 quilts in Dera Din Panah in the presence of a
generous donor from France, Mrs. Qureshi. (October 9, 2010)
Winter Protection

The floods not only left people without proper shelter, but without proper clothing and accessories as well to
protect them from the oncoming winter season.

1. J.A.W.A.N distributed much needed 1000 quilts (razai) and 100 family-sized tents in the rural areas falling
in Jampur, Fazilpur and Rajanpur districts. These included Raikh Baghwala, Darkhast Meeran, Bait
Sauntraan, Basti Mastoi and 11 other far flung villages lying near the river Indus. (October 23-24, 2010)
2. J.A.W.A.N distributed 1,500 quilts in flood affected and impoverished/war ravaged areas of Upper Swat
along the western tributary of River Swat. Areas as remote as Peochar next to Dir were touched during
this activity. This activity not only provided some relief to the people but also acted as a presence
indicator in these remote areas, which have thus far been neglected and rarely visited. (October 30-31,
2010)
3. J.A.W.A.N distributed another 2,000 quilts in Upper Swat along the western tributary of River Swat,
covering more villages left untouched on the first trip. (November 6-7, 2010)
4. J.A.W.A.N distributed 550 more quilts in the Jampur area. (November 6-7, 2010)
5. J.A.W.A.N distributed 700 sweaters, 350 jackets, 160 quilts, 100 blankets, 250 winter clothes for kids and
50 winter clothes and shawls for women in the identified needy areas of districts Jampur and Alipur.
(January 22-23, 2010)
Medical Camps

Owing to the widespread diseases in some of the worst hit, inaccessible and neglected areas, regular medical
camps have been arranged to provide some relief to the affected populace. Highlights of a few of them are.

1. J.A.W.A.N set up a medical camp at Akora/Misri Banda with the aim to address health issues faced by the
female population and children of areas inundated by the river Kabul in floods. We received support in
this cause from our generous donors from France and this camp was warmly welcomed. (October 16,
2010)
2. J.A.W.A.N arranged for a medical mission in the remote, inaccessible area of Mian Eisa in Swabi, where
no medical help had reached to date and people were in dire need. We were backed by our donors from
France and supported by a medical team from Pakistan Doctor's Association. Over 1000 patients were
treated in this camp. (October 17, 2010)

J.A.W.A.N has been able to achieve all this and will continue to do so thanks to the continued and generous
support of our friends within Pakistan and abroad. Alumni from GIKI, NUST and other schools have extended us a
great deal of support thus far, particular shout-out goes to people in KSA, UAE, Australia, S. Korea, Belgium,
England and USA. Further contributions from the alumni and their networks will help upscale and expedite the
rehabilitation and other community uplifting projects.
