PHILIPPINE LITERATURE IN CONTEMPORARY PERIOD

Today’s presentation is all about the period of Philippine Literature from 1986-onwards. The

Philippine literature during this time has continued to flourish and develop. Many writers of this time

have become more vocal and brave in expressing their thoughts and ideas after the fall of the Marcos

Regime. Something that I noticed about this period is that more of the writings were keenly political.

Almost everyone had his agenda overpower. They were also writings in the notions of suffering and

sacrifices. The discussant also had mentioned that the use of the English Language declined. Only a

few people then were reading. This was maybe because people back in 1986 were finally done

romanticizing comics and fiction stories and they had finally felt freedom. Films and plays had

continued here and even abroad. Many writers and artists were given appreciation during this time.

The sad part is that even up to this time is that creative writers do not matter in the Philippines. Yes,

they may be applauded yet not as much as old writers used to- they have little influence over people.

My realization after discussing the different periods in Philippine literature is that history and

literature are always connected. Whatever is written about the past will also be a part of the

literature. Literature influences how people think, react, and even decide. The literature will always

be present in peoples’ lives. It shapes the rich aspirations customs and traditions of people.
