MTH621 Assignment No.

2 2020

Question No: 1.
Let ¿ f ∨¿ be the function whose value at each x in Df is ¿ f ( x)∨¿. Prove: If f is
continuous at x 0, then so is ¿ f ∨¿. Is the converse true?

Solution:
Let ϵ > 0,then

||f |( x )−|f |( x 0 )|=||f ( x )|−|f (x 0 )||≤|f ( x )−f ( x 0)|

Moreover, since f is continuous at x 0, there exists a δ >0 such that |f ( x ) −f (x 0 )|<ϵ

Whenever |x−x 0|< δ so

||f |( x )−|f |( x 0 )|≤|f ( x ) −f ( x 0 )|<ϵ Whenever |x−x 0|< δ

Hence the function |f | is continuous at x 0

The converse is not true. Consider for instance the function

|x|
if x ≠0
f ( x )=¿ 1ifx x=0 ¿

Then |f | is continuous at 0, but f is not

Question No:2.
Suppose that f is continuous and increasing on [a , b]. Let f be differentiable at a point x 0
' 1
in (a , b), with f ' (x 0 )≠ 0 . If g is the inverse of f , show that g ( f ( x 0 ) ) = ' .
f (x 0)

Solution:
Since f is continuous and increasing on [ a , b ]

Since “g” is the inverse of . The inverse function g=f −1 is also increasing and
continuous
Let y 0=f ( x 0 )

Then

g ( y )−g( y 0)
¿ lim
y → y0 y − y0

g ( y )−g( y 0)
¿ lim
y → y0 f ( g ( y ))−f ( g ( y 0 ) )

1
f ( g ( y ) )−f (g ( y 0 ) )
¿ lim
y → y0 g ( y )−g( y 0 )

( g ( y ) ) ≠0 , ( g ( y 0 ) ) ≠0 (Denominator are not zero)

Since f is differentiable at x 0 and g is continuous

(As y → y 0 , x → x 0)

f ( g ( y ) )−f ( g ( y 0 ) )
= f́ ( x 0 ) +0(1) as y → y 0
g ( y ) −g ( y 0 )

Therefore
1
ǵ ( y 0 )=
f́ ( x 0)

1
ǵ ( f ( x0 ) ) =
f́ ( x0 )

Hence Proved
