Learning Target: Describe the nature of research
Reference: Casinto, C. D. (2016). Practical research 1: methods for qualitative
research. Cebu City: Mega Texts Phil., Inc.

Concept Note: The term research is composed of the root word search and the prefix
re. To Research means to look for and the prefix re means again. Etymologically, if
we put them together research would mean to look for again. Research enables us to
pursue a problem with the objective of solving it. It contributes to the growth of
knowledge. It generates new information or seeks to find applications for existing
information. A more comprehensive definition of research is offered by Calderon (2004)
a leading Filipino scholar on research writing. He describes research as a “purposive,
systematic process of gathering, analyzing, classifying, organizing, presenting and
interpreting data for the solution of a problem… and improvement of the quality of life.”
