Prob 4: combined stresses

A ship propeller of 60 kN weight is carried by a shaft of 22

cm diameter and overhangs the supporting bracket by 44
cm. The propeller receives 2985 kW at a speed of 300
rpm. If the propeller thrust is 148 kN, calculate the
principal stresses and maximum shear stress at a point E
on the surface of shaft. The point E is at the bottom of
shaft. Neglect the inertia forces.

Prob 5: Mohr’s circle
Home assignment
For the plane stress
condition illustrated in Fig,
if the minimum principal
stress is -7 MN/m2, using
Mohr circle, find σx and the
angle which the principal
stress axes make with xy
axes.
Also determine the other
principal stress.

Strain gage rosettes:

State of strain at point A on bracket is measured using the strain

rosette shown. Due to the loadings, the readings from the gauges give
a = 60(10-6), b = 135(10-6), and c = 264(10-6).
Determine the in-plane principal strains at the point and the
directions in which they act.

Prob 8:
A long thin plate of width b, thickness t and length L is placed
between two rigid walls at a distance b apart and is acted on by an
axial force P. Determine the deflection (δ) of the plate parallel to the
force P and normal strain in z-direction.

Assumptions: PL
• No normal stress in z-direction.    (1  2 )
• No friction at the walls Ebt

Prob 9:

A two dimensional displacement field is given by u = k(x2+y2), v = k(2x- y), w = 0,

where k is a constant. Obtain the deformed shape of a differential rectangular
element originally located with its left bottom corner at origin. Also calculate the
rotation component.
