Dear all,

Next Wednesday, March 25, at 12:30, Mariëlle Stel will present at our TICC colloquium.

Who: Mariëlle Stel
What: Effects of mimicry in understanding the emotions of others
Where: DZ3
When: Wednesday, March 25th, 12:30-13:30

Abstract:
Mimicry is defined as unconsciously imitating the nonverbal behaviors of others. It has been
shown that people often spontaneously mimic the facial and vocal expressions, mannerisms,
gestures, and postures of other people. In this talk, I will explain the mechanisms of mimicry
and facial feedback and I will present studies showing the consequences of these processes.

First, I will show when mimicry helps to understand the emotions of others. Furthermore, I will
discuss how deficits in mimicry and feedback mechanisms affect emotional understanding in
people with Autistic Spectrum Disorders. Finally, I will present studies in which we investigated
whether mimicry helps to judge the veracity of others' emotions.
