ANCIENT GREEK WRITERS

A BRIEF OVERVIEW
HOMER

¤  Homer lived between 800 and 900 BCE.

¤  He is the most famous writer from


Ancient Greece. Homer wrote the
Iliad and the Odyssey.

¤  Homer was the first person to record


the oral epic poems that entertained
and taught the Ancient Greeks.

¤  Homer also wrote poems about Greek


gods and goddesses called Homeric Hymns.

¤  Very little is known about Homer. Some people question


whether he actually existed or if several writers were grouped
under his name.
HESOID

¤  Hesoid wrote a century after Homer.

¤  His most famous work is Theogony,


which is an account of the creation
and evolution of the Greek gods.
AESOP

¤  Aesop wrote his fables (“The Tortoise


and the Hare,” “The Boy Who Cried
Wolf”) around 500 BCE.

¤  Aesop may have been a freed slave


of African descent, who lived in
Greece.
THE PLAYWRIGHTS

¤  Three major writers wrote the most


famous plays (usually tragedies).

¤  Aeschylus

¤  Sophocles

¤  Euripides

¤  They lived around 450 BCE and


battled with each other in
dramaticvcompetitions.
ROMAN WRITERS

¤  Ovid, who lived in 100 CE, is the


most notable Roman writer. He
updated many Greek myths to fit
with Roman tastes.
