Zoo Designer!

A new animal has just been discovered and is going to be shown at

the zoo. As an expert biologist, you have been asked to help design
the enclosure it will be kept in.

What do you
have to do?
You will need to design an
enclosure that takes into
account the needs of the
animal and then build a
diorama that represents
the enclosure.

Steps you will need to take

1. Investigate and identify:
a. the characteristics of living things and the needs that they have
b. the elements of zoo enclosures and how they are designed for both human
and animal safety.
2. Create two different designs of a zoo enclosure for your discovered animal. Your
designs must meet the project requirements and you should consider the
information you now know about animals' needs and the common elements of zoo
enclosures.
3. Get feedback from other expert biologists and use it to improve your design.
4. Label your final design and create a list of materials suitable for a builder to use.
5. Use your design to create a diorama or model of your enclosure.
6. Evaluate your diorama or model and add improvements where possible.
7. Present your model to the class and display it in the classroom for Parents' Night.
Rules and Requirements
To create a suitable enclosure you will need to take into consideration the needs
that all living things have. Your design will need to:
Be big enough for the animal to move around happily
Be safe for both the animal and the humans visiting the zoo.
Meet all the needs of the animal. E.g. Food, water, a friend etc.
Have a space where humans will be able to see the animal

You are free to use any materials that are in the classroom or that you bring in from
home. These materials include; cardboard boxes, popsticks, glue (PVA, glue sticks
and hot glue guns), sticky tape, string, straws, celophane etc.

Evaluation
Ensure your diorama and design
meet all of the specifications. A

possible enclosures. Both of the designs
must meet all of the project rules and
requirements. When you have created
