"The worse is yet to come," says Bolsonaro about

oil spill in northeastern Brazil

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has admitted there is a

criminal hand in the oil spill that has contaminated more
than 300 beaches in the northeast of the country and warned
that "the worst is yet to come."

"What hit the beaches is a small part of what was spilled.

The worst is yet to come, a much bigger catastrophe that
seems to have been criminal", said Bolsonaro in an
interview to Record TV on Sunday.

Since September 2nd, about 4,000 tons of oil have reached

314 beaches in the nine states of northeast region of
Brazil. Federal Police are investigating the Greek-flagged
Bouboulina ship owned by Delta Tankers LTD and loaded with
Venezuelan oil.

According to Bolsonaro, "all signs" point to this Greek

tanker, although the company has denied to be the cause of
the spill.

Investigations indicated that the crude oil spill occurred

about 700 kilometers off the Brazilian coast "between July
28 and 29".

Brazilian authorities reported that only the Greek-flagged

vessel crossed the region on such dates.

On Friday, the Federal Police issued two search warrants in

offices in Rio de Janeiro linked to the Greek ship
suspected of causing the spill.

In turn, Brazilian Defense Minister Fernando Azevedo e

Silva accompanied Sunday's operations in Abrolhos, a region
located on the southern coast of the state of Bahia, which
also houses corals of great ecological value.

Azevedo told reporters that Delta Tankers LTD had already

been notified on the matter, although the company denied,
in an article sent to Globo newspaper, that it contacted
Brazilian authorities to reiterate that it was not involved
in the ecological disaster.
