Drawing
Describing any object/ information
diagrammatically.

Engineering Drawing
Engineering graphics is the creation of
engineering drawings. These are
representations of physical
objects/locations on paper (in 2
dimensional or 3 Dimensional).
The language is known as
“drawing” or “drafting”
Impossible to describe
the details of the
building
Impossible to describe the details of
the Lathe Machine.
Representation of Electrical Circuit
Importance of Drawing:
1. Drawing is important for all branches of
engineering.
2. No construction/manufacturing of any
(man -made) engineering objects is
possible without engineering drawing.
3. Engineering drawing is completely
different from artistic drawing, which are
used to express aesthetic, philosophical,
and abstract ideas.

Computer has a major impact on the
methods used to design and create
technical drawings.
Design and drafting on computer are cheap
and less time consuming.
Why we go for manual drawing???
Why we go for manual drawing?
1. Computer cannot replace the drafting
board and equipment as a learning tool.
2. Once you have learned the basics of
mathematics, now after class 12, you are
allowed the use of calculator and computer.
3. If basic fundamentals are clear, better use
can be made of the power of the software.
4. To be an expert in technical drawing, this
first course on Engineering (manual)
Drawing is the first step.
Items required for drawings:
1. Drawing board
2. Drawing sheet (Half-Imperial)
3. T- square
4. Instrument box containing compass, divider, etc.
5. Scales
6. Set Square
7. French curves, Flexible Curves
8. Drawing pencils
9. Eraser
10. Drawing clip/pin/adhesive tape
11. Sharpener

Lines and Dimensioning:
Lines:
Basic Line Types
Name according
Types of Lines Appearance
to application

Continuous thick line Visible line

Continuous thin line Dimension line

Extension line
Leader line

Dash thick line Hidden line

Chain thin line Center line

Meaning of Lines:
Visible lines represent features that can be seen in the
current view
Hidden lines represent features that can not be seen in
the current view

Center line represents symmetry, path of motion, centers

of circles, axis of axisymmetrical parts

Dimension and Extension lines indicate the sizes and

location of features on a drawing
Types of Lines:
Text on Drawing:
Text on engineering drawing is used :

1. To communicate nongraphic information.

2. As a substitute for graphic information, in
those instance where text can communicate
the needed information more clearly and
quickly.
Placement of text on drawing:
Dimension & Notes

Notes Title Block

Dimensioning:
• Dimensions define the size of a feature or its
location relative to other features or a frame of
reference, called a datum.
• Indicating on a drawing, the size of the object
and other details essential for its construction
and function, using lines, numerals, symbols,
notes, etc.
Dimensioning of an
object is
accomplished by
dimensioning each
element to indicate
its size (size
dimensions) and
relative location
(location dimensions)
from a center line,
base line or finished
surface.
Each feature is
dimensioned
and positioned
only once.

Each feature is
dimensioned
and positioned
where its shape
shows.
Grouping Dimensions:
•Dimensions should always be placed
outside the part

Yes No
Dimensions should be placed in the view that
most clearly describes the feature being
dimensioned (contour (shape) dimensioning)
Prism – most common
shape
requires three dimensions -
give two dimensions on the
principal view and one
dimension on the other
views.
