Introduction
VW and Audi vehicles display “Actual Value” and “Basic Setting” information in blocks of data referred
to as “Display Groups.” Display Groups use a numbering system that ranges from 0 to 255. Most
engines, however, use only selected display groups between 0 and 125. Many Display Groups do
not contain data relevant to diagnosis and repair. These groups are not shown in this
publication.
Each Display Group contains 4 “fields” of data. The fields are numbered 1 to 4 from the top to the
bottom of the display when using the Retriever scan tool with VW / Audi software. The data is viewed
on the left half of the screen, and the corresponding data labels are shown on the right.
The Actual Values function is similar to the “live data” function found in most scan tools. “Basic Setting”
on the other hand, is unique to VW and Audi. This function is used when making adjustments and
viewing the resulting change on the display of the scan tool. The “Basic Setting” tables should always
be used in conjunction with the repair literature. In most cases, the values seen on the Basic Setting
charts of this publication can be viewed in Actual Values.
This book can be used to quickly find which Display Groups contain data that is useful to your
diagnosis. It is important to first identify the engine using the 3 letter identification system used by VW-
Audi (for example, AEB). This designation can be found on the engine, the timing cover or valve cover
label, or on a label in the trunk (see examples at the end of this publication). It may also be found in
the warranty maintenance manual on some vehicles.
Once you’ve established the engine designation, use the table of contents at the front of the book to
find the correct section. In each section, the Actual Values tables are shown first, followed by the Basic
Setting tables.
Each table has four rows of data corresponding to the 4 fields of data in the Display Group. Each row
shows the different parameters used to interpret the display field. The “Display” column indicates how
the left half of the screen should appear on the display (for example “xx.x V”). The “Indicated” column
is the data label (for example “Battery Voltage”). The “Working Range” column shows the range of
possible values for each field (for example 0-14.5 V). The “Specification” column shows the “nominal”
or expected value for each field (for example 13.5-14.5 V). Please note that in most cases certain pre-
conditions must be met (engine temperature, gear position, etc.) before the value is at specification.
Certain values (for example RPM or battery voltage) may appear in more than one display group. Also,
certain display group numbers may show unlabeled values. Usually this indicates that this group does
not contain relevant data as mentioned above.
• Many display groups do not contain data relevant to diagnosis and repair. These groups
are not shown in this publication.
• This is not a repair manual. The information in this publication should only be used as a quick
reference. We recommend you use this information in conjunction with factory-type repair literature.
• The information in this publication was obtained from many sources. We have verified the
information where possible, but AST is not responsible for any errors or omissions contained
herein.
• “Working range” and “specification” information varies widely from one source to another. When
in doubt, please refer to the repair literature for a complete explanation of these fields.
• Certain pre-test requirements (gear position, engine temperature, etc) have to be met for most
display groups. See the repair literature for more information.
