COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to provide the student with knowledge of the pathophysiology, medical
and surgical management of neurological disorders. The conditions selected for the course are
those which will be most often seen in the clinic.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the completion of this course the student will be able to:

4192. Describe the etiology, pathology, signs and symptoms of common neurological diseases
2. Outline the medical and surgical approaches to the treatment of the neurological diseases

COURSE OUTLINE
Neurology
Week 1. Neurological Evaluation
Week 2. Perinatal neurology:
-Hypoxic Ischemic encephalopathy, Cerebral Palsy, spina bifida
Week 3. Cognitive and behavioural disorders.
Week 4. Disorders of mobility - muscular dystrophies, myopathy.
Week 5. Disorders of central nervous system circulation: cerebrovascular
accidents
Week 6. Diagnostic radiology
Week 7. Disorders of the spinal cord
- Spinal cord injuries
- Spinal cord disease: e.g. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis; Guillain Barre
Syndrome; Poliomyelitis, Post polio syndrome, Tropical Spastic
Paraparesis
Week 8. Central and peripheral nervous system disorders
- Movement disorders, Parkinson's disease, Sydenham’s chorea
- Multiple sclerosis
- Epilepsy, encephalitis, meningitis
Week 9. Degenerative disc disease, Spondylosis
Week 10. Peripheral neuropathies, Neuromuscular Junction Disorder, Myasthenia
Gravis
Week 11 & 12 -Other Neurological Disorders
-Caisson’s Disease (Bends/Decompression sickness)
-Tetanus (neurological implications)
