3–71. A countershaft carrying two V-belt pulleys is shown in the figure. Pulley A receives power from
a motor through a belt with the belt tensions shown. The power is transmitted through the shaft and
delivered to the belt on pulley B. Assume the belt tension on the loose side at B is 15 percent of the
tension on the tight side.

(a) Determine the tensions in the belt on pulley B, assuming the shaft is running at a constant speed.
(b) Find the magnitudes of the bearing reaction forces, assuming the bearings act as simple
supports.
(c) Draw shear-force and bending-moment diagrams for the shaft. If needed, make one set for the
horizontal plane and another set for the vertical plane.
(d) At the point of maximum bending moment, determine the bending stress and the torsional shear
stress.
(e) At the point of maximum bending moment, determine the principal stresses and the maximum
shear stress.

SOLUTIONS

A.) The following equation shows the mathematical representation where it is explicitly
evidenced the act of the tension forces on the pulley B:
ΣT =0=( 300−45 )∗125 ( T 2−T 1 )∗150

ΣT =31875(0.15T 1−T 1)(150)=0

ΣT =31875−127.5 T 1=0

T 1=250 N . mm

T 2=( 0.15T 1)=0

T 2=( 0.15(250))=37.5 N . mm

B. Bearing in mind that bearings act as simple supports the following equations are
performed for the magnitudes acting on the mechanism:

1.1 In this equation, the acting moments in the O & Y axes are shown
mathematically.

ΣMoy=0=(345)(sin 45 °)(300)−287.5(700)−Rcz (850)

1.2 In this equation, the forces acting on the O & Z axes are shown mathematically.

ΣFz=0=Roz−(345)(cos 45 °)(300)+287.5−(150.7)=0

1.3 The acting moments in the C & Y axes are evaluated.

ΣMoz=(345 sin 45)(300)+ Rcy (850)=0

−345(sin 45 ° )(300)
Rcy=
850

Rcy=−86.10 N

1.4 Acting force between the o & y axes is evaluated.

ΣFy=Roy +345 cos 45 ° (300)−86.10=0

Roy=−(345cos 45)(300)+ 86.10

Roy=−157.9 N

bending moment diagrams, it is clear that the critical location is at A

where both planes have the maximum bending moment. Combining the bending moments
from the two planes,

M =√(−47.37)2 +(−32.16)2

M =57.26 N . m

The torque transmitted through the shaft from A to B is T = (300 45) (0.125) = 31.88 N·m.
For a stress element on the outer surface where the bending stress and the torsional stress
are both maximum,
