DESCRIPTION OF SURFACE PREPARATION STANDARDS

NACE............................................................ National Association of Corrosion Engineers.

SOLVENT WIPE: ........................................ Removal of oil and grease surface contaminants using solvent cleaning.
SSPC-SP-2
HAND TOOL CLEANING.......................... Removal of loose mill scale, loose rust and loose coatings by sanding, wire
brushing, grinding or scraping.
SSPC-SP-3
POWER TOOL CLEANING: ...................... Removal of loose mill scale, loose rust and loose coatings by power tool
sanding, wire brushing or grinding.
SSPC-SP-5 (NACE 1)
WHITE METAL ABRASIVE BLAST: ....... Removal of all (100%) visible mill scale, dirt, rust, existing coating by
abrasive blast cleaning using wet or dry grit, sand or shot.
SSPC-SP-6 (NACE 3)
COMMERCIAL ABRASIVE BLAST:........ Removal of mill scale, rust, dirt, existing coating to extent at least 66% of
surface area is free of all visible residue.
SSPC-SP-7 (NACE 4)
BRUSH ABRASIVE BLAST:...................... Removal of all loose mil and rust scales, loose coating, leaving only tightly
bonded matter.
SSPC-SP-8
ACID PICKLING: ........................................ Total removal of mill scale and rust by application of acid pickling solution.
SSPC-SP-10 (NACE 2)
NEAR WHITE METAL ABRASIVE BLAST: ......... Removal of at least 95% of all surface matter leaving area free of all
visible residues.
SSPC-SP-11
POWER TOOL CLEANING TO BARE METAL:.... Metal surface preparation, when viewed without magnification, free of
all foreign material and surface profile of not less than 1 mil.
SSPC-SP-12
HIGH PRESSURE AND ULTRA HIGH PRESSURE WATER JETTING: ........ Surface preparation of steel and other surfaces
by high pressure water jetting prior to recoating.
ACID ETCHING: ......................................... Removal of all concrete surface laitance by treating with diluted acid
(usually hydrochloric).
WATER BLASTING, CONCRETE............. High pressure water wash - approximately 2,000 psi, used with detergents
and/or abrasives for removal of loose surface contaminants.
