The Beast of Revelation 13

If you have your Biblcs I'm going to invite you to turn to Revelation
l:l.llsays,

"The Reuelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew
unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass ... "

This is a revelation of things which must shortly come to pass. Now,

that is important friends, because there are some people who think
that some things written in Revelation haven't even happened yet.
They think that none of this has happened and that's why, to them,
it's totally insignificant to even talk about the beast. They say, "Why
talk about the beast? I Ie won't even be revealed until after the church
has bcen raptured." So goes their theory. Paul did not agree with
their theory.

Turn with me to 2 Thessalonians 2:1 to 3,

"Now we beseech YOll, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus

Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, That ye be not
SOOIl shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word,

nor by the leller as from us, as the day of Christ is at hand. Let
110 man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come,
except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be
revealed ... "

Now friends, there's no clearer statement in all the Bible. That makes
it plain that "the man of sin" must be revealed before the church can
be gathered together "to meet the Lord in the air" [1 Thessalonians
4: 17].

And so, you see, it is very clear in the Scriptures that the book of
Revelation was written to the churches. "lie that hath an car let him
hear what the Spirit is saying unto the churches," Jesus said seven
limes in Revelation, chapters 2 and 3.

And so the book of Revelation was written to the churches. And it is

in the book of Revelation that we find the beast of Revebtion 13. (II
Revelation 1: 1 it says,
The n('ll~I of tccueiation 13

':.. lhillljS uihirhmust shortly come to pass ... "

AI"J so ;111 of this is going to come together as we go into our study

for we'll see Ulill we are living at the end of history. What is prophecy,
[r icnds? Wildl is prophecy? Prophecy is history written before it
liappeus, right? And so if we are living at the end of history,
isn'l Ihat
and if prophecy is history written in advance, then friends, it only
follows logically that we are living in the end of the prophecies. Does
that make sense? Surely it does; it's the only logical. understanding.
That's why, as we look into this prophecy, don't be amazed to discover
that it's later than you think! Oh yes, there are many things that will
harrell and that still must happen; but friends, many ofthe prophecies
of Daniel, as well as some prophecies in Revelation, have already come
to pass. The Bible says that these are things which must shortly come
to pass; bu t notice, it goes on to say in Revelation 1:1,

':.. am/ he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:"

So, the book of Revelation was sign-i-fied. It was communicated by

signs or symbols or tokens. The word "signified" has the word sign
in it.

God revealed this in signs, and so remember that as we turn to

Revelation 13 and look at this beast in Revelation 13:1 and 2, it says,

"I stood upon the sands of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of
the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten
crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. And the beast
which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet
of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon
gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. /I

What a creature! What a beast! The Bible says it had the body of a
leopard, the feet of a bear, the mouth of a lion, and ten horns. Seven
heads, tell horns, Len crowns upon his horns, the body of leopard, a
the feel of a bear, the mouth of a lion. What kind of a beast is that?
Well, surely it's no literal beast. There is no beast that looks like that.
It's a composite creature, isn't it? Made up of many other beasts. And
what is John s~lying here? Well friends, obviously this is a sign. This
is a symbol. 'l'liis is a vision that must be interpreted; and we can't

Pagc 5
The Dells! or Revelation 13 ..
'

guess, we can't give it our "own private interpretation" [2 Peter 1:20].

We have to let the Bible interpret itself.

Let's look. It says that this beast rose up out of the sea. Now, in
prophecy what does the sea or water represent? Well, since we're in
Revelation, let's look at Revelation 17::15. And again, I want you to
nolice that this is not my interpretation. This is, "Thus sailh the Lord."
It says here in Revelation 17:15,

"Ami he salth unto me, The waters which thou sauiest, where the
whore sltteth, are peoples and multitudes. and nations, and
tonques. If

So, the beast arose up out of the sea, and the sea out of which the
beast arose represents the "peoples, multitudes, and nations, and
tongues." Obviously, if the waters or the sea are symbolic, then the
beast itself must be symbolic. Symbolic of what?

Any Jew or Christian who knew the Old Testament, when receiving
this letter from John the Revelator, and reading the text that says this
beast had the mouth of a lion, the feet of a bear, the body of a leopard,
and ten horns, automatically would turn in his Bible to the book of
Daniel. So let's do that. Turn to the book of Daniel and we'll see
that John has clearly linked chapter 13 of Revelation with chapter 7
of Daniel. Come with me now to Daniel, chapter 7. There are so
many similarities between Daniel 7 and Revelation 13 that anyone
who just casually reads the two chapters can see that they go together
like "hand in glove." Listen to what is says in Daniel, chapter 7, verses
2 and 3,

"Daniel spake and said, I saw in my vision by night, and, behold.

the [our winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea. And four
great beasts came up from the sea, diverse one from another."

And so Daniel, in his vision, sees four beasts coming out of the sea.
Now, what do these beasts represent? Notice what it says in Daniel
7: 17,

"These great beasts, which are four. are four kings, which shall
arise out of the earth."
111e /J('(JS/ of Neve/a/ion 13

Now nul ice, is lie talking about a singular king? One king? Or is he
talkillg about a king in the sense of a kingdom? Well, turn with me
lo DJI Iiel 7::n LIlJd it becomes clear.

"Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom ... II

And so notice that a beast in prophecy represents a kingdom. The

fourth beast represented the fourth kingdom. And if the fourth beast
represents the fourth kingdom, then the first three beasts represent
the first three kingdoms. According to prophecy, a beast represents
J kingdom. Now, these arose out of the sea; and the sea, we learned,
represents multitudes, nations, peoples, and tongues. And it says that
when the wind blew upon the sea these beasts arose. So, what does
the wind represent? Well if you turn with me to Jeremiah 51: 1, it
says,

"Thus salth the Lord; Behold, I will raise up against Babylon, and
against them that dwell In the midst of them that rise up against
me, a destroying uilnd;"

God says lie's going to send Babylon "a destroying wind."

Now, let me ask you a question. Was Babylon destroyed by a tornado

or a hurricane? No. But God says I'll send against Babylon "a
destroying wind." What was the destroying wind He sent friends? He
sent the winds of strife. Winds, according to prophecy, symbolize
warfare.

In fact, in Jeremiah 25:32, we find another statement that will bring

this out. It says,

"Thus sailh the Lord of hosts, Behold, evil shall go forth from
nation to nation, and a great whirlwind shall be raised up from
the coasts of the earth."

So, when evil goes from nation to nation, warfare from nation to
nation, it is likened to a whirlwind. When God speaks of war upon
the nation, lIe speaks of it in the symbols of winds upon the sea. And,
of coursc, one nation arises victorious.

Page 7
The Beast or Rcoclation 13
", .

Come with me now to Daniel 7, and let's look at these four beasts
which, we are told, are four kingdoms; Daniel 7, beginning with verse
3.

"And four great beasts came up from the sea, diverse one from
another. The first was like a lion, and had eagle's wings .•. "

"... 1 beheld till the wings thereof were plucked, and it was litted
up from the earth, and made stand upon the feet as a man, and a
mall's heart was given to it. /I

And so the first beast that he saw rising out of the sea was a lion and
it had eagle's wings. Now friends, we have to know who this lion
represents, and we can't guess.

Now, let me show you how not to interpret prophecy. Can] do that?
Ilow should you not interpret prophecy? You should not interpret it
with your own imagination or with the newspaper of today. You
should let the Bible interpret itself.

)'11 never forget having quite a discussion with one of the elders in
my church when I was just 13 or 14 years old, because I was reading
the hook of Daniel and studying it with a commentary, and he was
reading it and interpreting it according to the headlines. And he said,
"Oh, ) understand this prophecy. The lion represents England, the
wings represent the United States. You see they are wings of an eagle,
and the lion is going to come against the bear; and the bear represents
Russia, and Russia is going to defeat the United States because the
bear is going to defeat the lion, you see." I said, "Well, no, I can't
agree with that. And, of course, I showed him that no commentators
H

agreed with him on that. All commentators agree on letting the Bible
interpret itself, at least this far into the prophecy. And I began to share
with him what I'm going to share with you; and he' argued, he said,
"What do you know; you're nothing but a child."

And then a verse came to my mind and I said, "You know, brother,
you're right; I'm nothing but a babe and you're wise and prudent, and
you're an elder in the church. You're wise and prudent and I'm
nothing but a babe." And then he straightened up his shoulders and
said, "lIum, now he's talking." And I said, "But you know, brother,
Jesus said He'd hide it from the wise and prudent and reveal it unto
The lieus! or Revelation 13

babes" l~lt1ttllc\v 11:25]. And so as I said, as we interpret these

prophecies, let's be sure that we're not putting upon them our own
"private il rtcrpr clations." Yes, it is true that today we do as God did
then. We represent nations by animals or beasts. Yes, it is true that
AmcricLI is likened to an eagle, Canada to a beaver, and Russia to a
bear, Fr aucc to a rooster, China to a dragon. And there are different
beast s t1ldt we associate with different nations. But friends, the
question is: what was God symbolizing by these beasts? And we can't
take loday's views or today's ideas of which beast represents what
nation <1I1d then superimpose them upon what God wrote. You see,
that would be giving the Scriptures a "private interpretation," which
Peter says we should not do.

Now, let's look at what the Bible itself says about the lion. Who does
the lion represent? Well, turn with me to Jeremiah 50:43, and there'll
be no guessing. By the way, it is important to remember that Daniel
studied the book of Jeremiah; in fact,he tells us in Daniel 9:2 that he
indeed studied the book of Jeremiah. And so as we go to Jeremiah,
remember that this was a book that Daniel had in his library. And so
Daniel knew very well who the lion was, because Jeremiah had already
spoken it. Jeremiah 50:43 and 44 says,

"The king of Babylon hath heard the report of them, and his hands
waxed feeble: anguish took hold of him, and pangs as of a woman
In travail. Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling
of Jordan ... "

So, Babylon was likened unto a lion.

Now, if you turn to Jeremiah 4:6 and 7, you'll find that again Jeremiah
makes this allusion. Remember that Babylon attacked from the north
and so it says in Jeremiah 4:6,

"Set up the standard toward Zion: retire, stay not: for I will bring
enil from the north ... "

What was the evil that came from the north that Jeremiah was
predict illg? Babylon was the evil nation that came from the north.
Jeremiah "':7 SJ},S,
The Beast o!Neue/a/ion 13
" .

"... and a great destruction. The lion is come up from his thicket,
and the destroyer of the Gentiles is on his way ... "

Jeremiah was predicting the coming of Babylon, and here we find

Babylon represented as a lion. Now, why does he have eagle's wings?
Habakkuk 1:6 mentions the Chaldeans (which, remember, was the
other name of the Babylonians). The Babylonians were the
Cha\deans, and so he says the Chaldeans in verse 6. And he mentions
lhem. lIe says in verse 8,

"Their horses also are swifter than the leopard's, and are more
fierce than the evening wolves: and their horsemen shall spread
themselves, and their horsemen shall come from far; they shall fly
as the eagle that hasteth to eat. /I

And so Habakkuk says yes, Babylon will come. Jeremiah had said "as
a lion," and Habakkuk said he would come and "fly as an eagle." So
the eagle's wings represent the speed with which Babylon would come
upon the land of Israel. And so Daniel, in his vision, speaks of the
lion. These were the great beasts that were to arise.

Now, why does Daniel say "these great beasts, which are four, are
four kingdoms [kings] that will arise"? Because Babylon was still on
its way up when Daniel said this. Babylon had not yet reached the
zenith of its power. It was still climbing, and it was still ascending in
its glory; and so he says these are four kingdoms that shall arise. Of
course, Daniel lived in the time of Babylon. The lion represented
Babylon, which came to power in 606 and 605 B.C. It was then that
Babylon arose out of the sea of civilization and became a world
empire.

Now, continue with me in Daniel 7:5,

"And behold another beast, a second, like unto a bear, and it raised
up itself on one side, and it had three ribs in the mouth of it
between the teeth of it: and they said thus unto it, Arise, devour
much flesh."

Now, what does the bear represent? It lifts itself up on one side. It
has "three ribs in the mouth of it," and it is the beast that follows the
lion. We have already studied the great prophecy of Daniel 2. We
7)/1; lscast uf Reoelation 13

talked about that image. It had a head of gold, chest and arms of
silver, belly and thighs of brass and finally, legs of iron which were
divided iul o l cn toes. And you will notice that these prophecies are
parallel,

You see, there's a principle in prophecy. It's the principle of repetition

and el dJrgemenL God repeats llimself and adds more and more
details as lie goes on in the prophecies. Like any good teacher, you
have to repeat yourself and then add information as it is necessary.
And so Cod here is going into more detail. He says, "(e«, Babylon
will arise and it will be followed by another kingdom that will lift itself
up 011 one side" [paraphrased]. Now, what was the kingdom that
followed Babylon? We don't have to guess. Daniel, chapter 5, verse
28 says,

"PEIlES; Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and

Persians. /I

The Mcdcs and the Persians. It was the Medo-Persian empire that
defeated Babylon in 538 B.C. Now, why does it say the bear lifted
itself up on one side? Because the Persians became greater than the
Medcs, remember. And, of course, the three ribs in it's mouth would
represent the three provinces that Medo-Persia had to conquer in
order to become a world empire. Those were the provinces of Lydia,
Babylonia, and Egypt, And so the bear conquered Babylon and [then]
itself became a world empire - Medo-Persia, But then Daniel goes on
to say in chapter 7, verse 6,

"After this I beheld, and 10 another, like a leopard, which had upon
the back of it four wings of a fow/; the beast had also four heads;
and dominion was given to It."

And so, now he sees a third beast, This one is like a leopard, and it
has four heads. Four heads, WOW! He's bringing in more and more
symbolism here, isn't he? Four heads this time! Now, what is this
third beast?\Veil, it's the third kingdom. The kingdom that would
conquer Mcdo-Persia. Now, what was that kingdom? Again, we don't
have 10 guess. Turn to Daniel 8:20 and read as follows:

"The ram which thou sawest having tuio horns are the kings of
Media and Persia. /I

Page 11
The Beast of Revelution 13

Notice that in chapter 8, under one beast, the ram beast, Daniel
symbolizes the Medo-Persian empire. So it is clear that Mcdo-Persia
wJS one kingdom. Even though it was made up of the Medes and the
Persians, God considered it one kingdom and pictured it under one
heJst.

So, we are correct in understanding that the one beast, or the bear,
indeed represents Medo-Persia. It was the kingdom that followed the
lion or Babylon. So, Babylon is followed by the bear, Medo-Persia.
But !lOW, in this chapter, Medo-Persia is represented under the symbol
of a ram. But what is the kingdom that follows Medo-Persia? Notice
verse 21, "the rough goal" Here, under the symbol of a rough goat
Daniel 8:21 says,

"And the rough goat is the Icing of Credo •••/I

So, the third kingdom is Greece. The lion represents Babylon. The
bear represents Medo-Persia, Greece conquered Medo-Persia in 331
B.c. It was in 331 B.C. that Alexander the Great conquered the
then-known world and became, himself, the world emperor. And
Greece became that world empire. And we are told that the beast has
four heads. Notice as we read in Daniel 8:22,

"Nou: that being broken, whereas four stood up for it." (other
versions read four horns) "four kingdoms shall stand up out of the
nation, but not In his power. 1/

Now, this is important because you see, as you read the verse previous
to this, you find that in this vision Daniel saw a ram. It had one horn.
You see, Greece was one kingdom, but the one horn was broken and
in the place of the one horn came up four horns.

Now, it's obvious here that we're studying a parallel prophecy. What
is here represented as four heads, is in Daniel 8 represented as four
horns. The four horns are the same as the four heads. They represent
the same thing, only under a different symbolism. And we are told
specifically in Daniel 8:22,

"... that being broken ..,"

the first horn being broken, four horns stood up for it.
7hc Beast of lteuelation 13

What LltJ Ihcsc [our horns represent? It says specifically:

"Four killgdol1ls shall stand up out of the nation, but not in his

We've already learned that horns represent kingdoms, and heads

rcprcscut lhc same thing. Now, I'll prove that in another way by going
10 Revelation 17. You see, it's important that we understand these
symbols. The sea represents nations and multitudes, peoples and
tongues IRevelation 17: 151. The beasts represent kingdoms. The
wings represent speed. The horns represent kingdoms and the heads
represent kingdoms, Now why does a beast represent a kingdom; and
heads and horns represent kingdoms? Well, there is a slight variation
there. You see, heads and horns arise out of the beast So heads and
horns represent kingdoms coming out of an already existing
kingdom. That's why horns or heads are shown coming out of or
upon a beast. A beast represents the kingdom and then when heads
or horns arise, they are kingdoms arising out of that already existing
kingdom. Now, notice here that these heads indeed represent
kingdoms just like the horns. It says in Revelation 17:9 and 10,

'/1",I here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are
seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth. And there are seven
kings ... If

Now, we already looked up Jeremiah 51:25 where God says of

Babylon, thou art a destroying mountain.

Babyloll is a destroying mountain. God represents kingdoms as

mountains. That's why lie says, in Isaiah 2:2,

'~.. ill the last days, that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be
established ill the top of the mountains ... "

You see, the kingdom of God shall be above all kingdoms. So

mountains represent kingdoms. We are told the seven heads are
seven mounl ains; and then Daniel makes it clear. He says these
mount :IilIS arc seven kings. And where you have kings you have
killgdollls. And so we see that these heads represent kingdoms. Now,
Greece arose ill 331 n.c.; but remember that when Alexander the
Creal died, lite one kingdom of Greece was divided into four
The Beast of NCl'ddti()11 13
" .

kingdoms. There were the kingdoms of his four generals:

l.ysimachus, Cassandcr, Seleucus, and Ptolemy. And those kingdoms
of his [our generals continued right down until 168 B.C. when a fourlh
kingdom was to arise.

Now, turn with me to Daniel 7:7 where this fourth kingdom is

described. Notice we're coming right down the stream of time. God
has no blind spots. That's why I like to keep these pictures tight
together. I want you to notice that when Babylon fell in 538 B.C., it
was then that Medo-Persia arose. When Medo-Persia fell in 331, it was
then [that] Greece arose. And when Greece fell in 168 [3.C., a fourth
kingdom arose. It says in Daniel 7:7,

''After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast,
dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great
iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the
residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts
that were before it; and it had ten horns. /I

Now, friends, it's obvious that what we are studying is exactly the
truth of Scripture. Why? Because it is confirmed by every other
prophecy. You see, it's all dovetailing, isn't it? Everyone of the
prophecies is coming together. Remember when we studied Daniel
2? The head of gold represents Babylon. The chest and arms of silver
represent Medo-Persia. The belly and the thighs of brass represent
Greece. And then the legs of iron, the fourth mineral in the statue,
are parallel to the fou rth beast which has great iron teeth. Daniel
wants us to see the parallel between the fourth beast with iron teeth
and the fourth mineral, the iron legs. Legs of iron. And then
remember the kingdom of iron was to be divided into ten toes. This
beast had ten horns. You see, friends, the prophecy is foolproof. As
we study prophecy and we let the Bible interpret itself, there can be
no confusion. It's all coming together. As I see this I cry out, "ilow
great Thou art"! and 1 can sing, "He's still got the whole world in Ilis
hands."

God is in control of history and though man may devise his own way,
the Lord directs his footsteps; and God is still in the council of the
mighty, even today. The United Nations, the United States, Russia,
and the world may think that their plans are being carried forth
according to their theories and opinions. In fact, God is overruling

ill ever yillilig. It's not His perfect will that is being done; but friends,
Cods will is yet coming to pass. Not /lis perfect will, but that
acccpl.iblc will of Cod is happening and ill all, lie overrules.

AIIU SI), we come to this fourth kingdom. It's obvious that we're
talkillg about Home. Home was the iron monarchy that even Gibbon,
tile gre~lt lustorian, spoke of. It arose in 1G8 B.C. It was Rome that
conquered the Grecian empires of Seleucus, Cassander, Ptolemy and
l.ysimachus. The empires that those generals established continued
UOWIlto 168. But they were defeated by the Romans, and Rome arose
ill lGtj B.C. as a world power. Rome continued down to 476 A.D.
Four hundred and seventy-six years after the Lord Jesus had come to
this earth Home was still the empire to reckon with. In fact, Paul
understood this prophecy, as we'll see as we continue. But notice
that Daniel had said that when the legs of iron crumbled, they would
be divided into ten toes. When the Roman kingdom fell, it would be
divided into tell toes or ten horns.

Now, it's very important that you notice some things that we're going
to read here. It says in verse 8 [Daniel 7:8J,

"1considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them

another little horn," (You will see that this little horn doesn't stay
lillie; DJI tiel, chapter 8 tells us that this lillie horn waxed exceedingly
great.) "before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up
by the rools: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of
a man, and a mouth speaking great things. 1/

Now, what I want you to notice is the word "first." It says that before
this horn, three of the first horns were plucked up by the roots. Now
friends, many, many commentators, many students of prophecy have
missed that word. That word will prove that what we're talking about
. here is history. Now, I know some people are still looking for the fall
of the Homan Empire. But I've got news for you. Get your history
book. Home Icll a long time ago. But there are some who have a
tendency to put prophecy in the future. They think that because it's
Bible prophecy, it must be in the future. But friends, remember, it
was prophecy when Daniel wrote it; it was prophecy even in the days
of John when he wrote the Hevelation. Bul he, himself, says that these
are thillgs which "must shortly come La pass" [Revelation 1:1].

i\nd though God told Daniel to seal up his book because the predicted
events wouldn't happen "until the time of the end," it's interesting
that the book of Revelation was never sealed. Do you know why?
Well, let me read it to you from Revelation 22:10 where Jesus says to
John,

"And he salth unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this
book: for the time is:at hand. "

The time was at hand. You see, these were things that would "shortly
come to pass." John knew that it wouldn't be long until the Roman
Empire would fall. And when the Roman Empire fell, up would come
ten horns. But let me share with you the proof that what Daniel is
talking about is indeed history at this point, Ican prove it because
Rome has already fallen. All agree that it fell in 476 A.D. And the
Bible says that this lillie horn would pluck up three of the first horns.
Now, what were the three horns that attacked the Roman Empire?
i\ll you have to do is get your history book out, Dust it off. Dust off
your history book, your college or your high school history book, and
study, and you will find that all the things we've said are the facts of
history. You have Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome. Rome
fell in 476 A.D. and when Rome fell, ten barbarian nations swept down
into Western Europe, They were the Heruli, the Vandals and the
Ostr ogoths, the Anglo-Saxons, the Franks, the Alemannians, the
Suevi, the Visigoths, the Lornbards, and the Burgundians. And
friends, you'll recognize seven of those nations today. The
Anglo-Saxons are the English. The Franks are the French. The
Alemanni are the Germans. The Visigoth are the Spanish. The Suevi
are the Portuguese. The Lombards are the Italians, and the
Burgundians are the Swiss. But three of them you don't recognize
because they were three of the first, They were three of the first horns
to attack the Roman Empire. They were the Heruli.Ihe Vandals, and
the at rogoths.

Friends, go to your history books and you will find that the Goths
attacked Rome, the Vandals attacked Rome and the Jleruli attacked
Rome. But they're no longer around today. Why? Because prophecy
said that though ten horns would arise, another would arise among
them. And this little horn would subdue "three of the first. i\nd H

and we'll prove it as we continue.

Now, notice with me what it says as we continue reading in Daniel 7,

because we have to know who this little horn is. If we can discover
wlto this lillie horn is, then friends, we can discover who the beast of
Rcvclaliun 13 is. It's obvious that there's a correlation there, because
notice that this beast has the mouth of a lion, the feet of a bear, the
body of a leopard and it has ten horns. Now, notice with me Daniel
7. As we reaJ we're going to pull from Daniel 7, right out of the text
itself, some identifying clues that will help us to identify who that little
horn is. Who is that little horn of Daniel 7? Well, let's see; the Bible
gi ves us some identifying cI ues that will hcl p us. First of all, of course,
ill Daniel 7:8 it specifically says,

"l considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them
another little horn ... /I

And so, the first clue we have is that this little horn would come up
([11/0ng the ten. Now, when we say among the ten, we know that
means Western Europe because those ten barbarian nations came to
Western Europe. It is there that they settled. We're talking about
Western Europe. And that little horn has to arise in Western Europe
among the ten. Now in Daniel 7:24 it says,

'j1nd the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall
arise: and another shall arise after them ... tt

Hight there in your Bible it specifically says that this little horn would
come up among the ten and it would come up after the ten. Now
this is very important because as people have attempted to identify
that little 110m, some have said, "It's Nero." It can't be Nero, friends.
Why cau't Ihat horn be Nero? Because Nero did not come up after
the lcn. Nero was a Homan emperor who existed as the emporer
hefure tIle ten IIJd ever become kingdoms, before the ten had ever
arisen ill Western Europe. Remember, the ten toes or the ten horns

horn, we must find it where? In Western Europe, and we must find

it after the rise of the ten nations of Europe, after the date of 476
A D. because it was then that Rome fell. And the barbarians did not
come into that area of the Western Roman Empire until the Roman
legions were retreating. And so we can only look for this little horn
in Western Europe after the date 476. But remember, this little horn,
according to the Scripture, was to subdue three of the first horns. So
this lillie horn has to be back there in history. It has to come up
among the ten and it has to subdue three of the first, So you see,
people that are still looking for this little horn in the future have
missed the whole point of the prophecy. The prophecy says that this
lillie horn would come up among the ten, right after the fall of the
Roman Empire. It would arise then. No wonder Jesus says in
Revelation 1:1,

I~ •• thinqs which must shortly come to pass ... /I

And no wonder, in 2 Thessalonians 2:7, Paul said,

"the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now

letteth will/et, until he be taken out of the way." (some translations
SJy) "he who now hindereth will hinder. /I

You see, friends, Paul was referring to the Roman Empire. And it
was the Roman Empire and the Roman emperor, "he who now letteth"
or hindereth, who would continue to hinder until he was "taken out
of the way." And it wasn't until Constantine went to Constantinople
and it wasn't until the emperors and the empire of Rome left Western
Europe that all of the rest of the prophecies could fall into place. Only
then could the mystery of iniquity that was already at work in the
days of Paul come to fruilion. And the Bible says that this lillie horn
would arise among the ten, way back then when the ten nations were
arising. It would arise among them. After the fall of the Roman
Empire, and it would subdue three of the first horns.

Now, let's look althe rest of the clues that the Bible gives us. You
will notice that in Daniel 7:8 it says,

"I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them
another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns

pluck n! lip by the roots: and behold, ill this horn were eyes like
the eyes of a 1l/CI1l, and a mouth speaking great things. /I

It SJy~ it !J;IS "eyes like the eyes of a man." And so, we say it has a
m.m Jttile head. "Eyes like the eyes of a man and a mouth speaking
glcatillillgs." A man is at the head of this horn power; a man is at
the hc.rd of this kingdom. Remember, a horn represents a kingdom.
lranicl said the four horns shall be four kingdoms [Daniel 7:23]. And
so this hor n, like the ten horns, must be a kingdom. Just as the ten
I torus arc similar to the ten toes of the image, so this horn is a kingdom
and it is to fulfill all of these identifying marks. It says that it would
subdue three, and would have a man at the head. In fact, if you notice,
nanicl 7:24 says,

'jllld the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten /rings that shall
arise: another shall arise otter them; he shall be diverse from the
first, he shall subdue three kings."

So, this horn was to be different, It was to be diverse. It was to

subdue three of the first kings. And, of course, where there are kings
there are kingdoms. And so this little horn is to do all of these things.
Hut friends, CoJ doesn't leave us with just a few clues. He goes on
to make it so clear that no one can misunderstand. Of course, we
read ill verse 8 that this horn had "eyes like the eyes of a man and a
mouth speaking great things." And verse 25 repeats this thought, It
says,

'lIlld he shall speak great words against the most lIigh .•. n

So, he speaks "great things" or "great words against the most High."
Now, when we get to Revelation, we'll see what all that involves. But
notice, this little horn is going to speak "great things," or "great words
against the most lIigh." It's diverse, it has a man at the head, it
subdues three, it arises aftcr the fall of the Roman Empire. Now,
remember, it's after the fall of the Roman Empire that it becomes a
horn. We'll see that it existed before then, and I'll prove that from
the \\.'1 itillgS of Paul. But it's after the fall of the Roman Empire that
it is to become J horn or a kingdom. Until Rome fell, until ten had
arisen, this lillie horn could not become what it became, which was
a poliliral system. Remember, a horn represents a kingdom.

Pagc 19
The Bcust o( Rcvclution 13

Now, we go on and we find another clue, because it specifically says

in verse 21, (and this is a very important clue),

"I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and
prerailed against them;" .

So, this little horn is going to make war on the saints. And then the
Bible goes on to give us some more clues. It goes on to say in verse
25,

"And he shall speak great words against the mostlligh, and shall
wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times
and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and
times and the dividing of time."

Now, those are the last two clues that I'm going to show you in just
a moment, He'll "think to change times and laws" and they, the saints
of God, will "be given into his hand until a time and times and the
dividing of time." But notice verse 26. After this time, times and
dividing of time it says,

"But the judqment shall sit, and they shall takeaway his dominion,
to consume and to destroy it unto the end. /I

Now, friends, it gets .intercsting here; obviously this is some time

period. It says, "a time times and the dividing of lime." But what does
that mean? Why would Daniel speak of a period of time in that way?
llave you ever written to your mom, "Hi, Mom. I'll be staying over
at my friend's house for a time, times and half a time." You see, that's
not a common way of expressing oneself, especially not of expressing
chronology. Why does Daniel use that expression, a time, times and
half a lime [dividing of lime]? Well, friends, the answer comes as we
look at the prophecy. Obviously, this is a special period. It begins
when this little horn begins to make war on the saints. This little
horn was to arise as a kingdom right there in Western Europe and
was to fulfill all of these clues. And it says they, the saints, will be
given unto his hand until a time, times and half a time [see Revelation
12: I-l, "half a lime." ed.] But then the very next verse says,

"But the judqment shall sit ... " [Daniel 7:26]

'lllc Iku,l ()f tccuclation 13

"The jiltiglllelll shall sit.." So, this litlle horn arises at the fall of the
1~()IllLIII1':lllpirl! and yet it continues until the judgment shall sit. And
l>alliel s: ~'S this period will be a time, times and half a time [the
JiviJillg or lime]. Obviously, it's symbolic. In fact, it is so obvious
Ulat this is the cJSC that I need not explain it. You see, the beast is a
symbol, isn't il? The wings are a symbol. The heads are symbols.
The horus arc symbols. The waters are symbols. The winds are
symlx.ls.

Well, let's see what this lime represents. The important thing is that
you realize that we're dealing with symbolic prophecies here. Now,
notice in Revelation 12: 1 it says,

"there appeared a great wonder in heaven ... "

And if you have a newer version or the King James with margins, it
specifically says, 'There appeared a great sign in heaven"

"... a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet,
ami "1'011 her head a crown of twelve slars:"

Now, [ricnds, this is not a literal woman. It specifically says that this
was "a sign in heaven'; and almost all commentators agree that this
is not a literal woman. It is a symbolic woman. We'll talk about who
she symbolizes when we talk about the beast, the dragon and the
woman. nut let's prove it's not a literal woman. Notice what it says
here in Revelation 12, verse 6,

"And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place
prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two
hU11l1reJand threescore days."

Now, it's not a literal woman. Most scholars agree on that And here
it says she's goi!lg to run into the wilderness for "a thousand two
hundred and threescore days." Now, come down to verse 14. It says,

"Alid to the woman were gillen two wings of a great eagle .••"

Now, is this a lilcr al woman? Obviously not. A literal woman would

not receive cLJgle's wings, would she? The eagle's wings are no more
lilcr al he rc than they are 011 the beast of Daniel 7. These are symbolic.

PJge ~ 1
The Beast o( Rcrctation J 3

And so, we must agree that we're talking about a symbolic woman.
Now, if the woman is symbolic, what about the days? It says this
woman fled into the wilderness for 1260 days and we have to agree
- it's not a literal woman. Well, then why would we argue that they
are literal days? Think it through. N~w turn with me and look at
verse 14, the rest of it. It says,

"to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she
might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is
nourished for a time, and times.and half a time, from the face of
the serpent. II

So this woman flees into the wilderness for a time, times and half a
time. And this time, times, and half a time in verse 6 is explained to
be 1260 days. But, are we referring here to literal days or symbolic
days? That is the question. And we must understand this, for you
see, it's obvious that this lillie horn reigns for the same period of time.
The time, times and half a lime is 1260 days. The Bible is clear about
that. It says that this little horn would "think to change times and
laws" and of course, it says that it was to reign for 1260 days. Now
in the book of Revelation, it talks about the woman receiving wings,
flying into the wilderness for 1260 days. And the question we ask is:
are the days literal? Because you see, if the days are literal, then the
woman should be literal. Then the eagle's wings should be literal.
We have to be consistent, don't you agree?

Now, it's interesting that right here in the book of Revelation, chapter
2, we find another period of time. It says in Revelation chapter 2,
verse 10, (and ]'11 encourage you to look up what the different
commentaries say about this verse),

"Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the
devil shall cast some of you Into prison, that ye may be tried; and
ye shall have tribulation ten days ... /I

Isn't it interesting? Jesus is writing to the church of Smyrna and says

you "shall have tribulation ten days." Now, friends, go and study what
the different commentators - I don't care what denomination they
belong to - have to say about that verse. You see, most scholars agree
that these seven churches represent seven church ages, periods of
history through which the church would pass - Ephesus being the
The lteast of Reuelation 13

apostolic church, Smyrna being the church that was persecuted by

the !l1J11l:1I1
Empi re, and then tracing the history of the church down
to 0111d.iy, we find that the church today is in a Laodicean condition.
I'm SIll c you're familiar with the inte rpretation given by most scholars
to tile seven churches. Now, why would Jesus write to a church and
say you're going to "have tribulation ten days"? Friends, I can telI
you tJIJt every Christian living at that time had tribulation for more
than tell literal days. Everyone of them had tribulation longer than
thaI. AIIU yet, Jesus specifies you're going to have "tribulation ten
days." Now, again I challenge you to look up what different
commentaries say - even things like lIaley's Bible Handbook and
other commentaries. You will find that they all agree with what I am
going to share with you now. And it's nothing secret. It's something
that Cod has revealed in l lis Word. Because, you see, these days are
symbolic. Like the beasts are symbolic; like the wings are symbolic;
like the heads are symbolic; like the horns are symbolic; the days are
also symbolic. And we're told that this little horn wilI reign "a time,
limes and half a time," or 1260 days. But what do days represent?
Turn with me now to Ezekiel 4:6. This is not my interpretation. This
is what Cod says. What do the days represent? We learned what a
beast represents. It represents a kingdom. We learned what the
horns represent, what the winds represent, what the wings represent,
what the water represents. Now we're going to learn what the days
represent. And you can't miss this, folks. It says in Ezekiel 4:6,

"when thou hast accomplished them, lie again on thy right side,
and thou shalt bear the iniquity of the house of Judah forty days:
I have appointed thee each day for a year. /I

Cod says I've given you "each day for a year" [paraphrased]. Now,
remember Ezekiel and Daniel were contemporary prophets. Ezekiel
was preaching to the Northern Tribes that were in captivity to Assyria,
and Daniel was preaching in Babylon. They were contemporary
prophets. And Cod said I have given to you "each dayfer a year."
The (by was a symbol of a year. Now the Bible says, "in the mouth
of lwo or three witnesses let everything be established" [2 Corinthians
13: II. So COIne with me to Numbers 14:34. It says,

"After the "limber of the clays in which ye searched the land, even
forty days, each clay for a year ... "
So a~Jill, there in the book of Numbers - a book Daniel surely knew
and studied - God had said, "each day for a year."

Now, IID\\I many of YOLI arc familiar with the prophecy of the 70 weeks?
Daniel said that there would be seventy weeks from the going forth
of the decree to build Jerusalem unto the coming of the Messiah, the
Prince. Actually, he said 69 weeks to the coming of Messiah [Daniel
9:2·1, 25]. Now, friends, look again at what any commentary says
about those weeks. lIow many days are there in a week, by the way?
Seven. And let me tell you that U1e Hebrew word for "week" in the
prophecy of Daniel 9 is the same word used in "a week of days" That's
why all commentaries agree that the seventy weeks are 490 days. But
all commentators agree that the days are not literal days, but are
actually years. Ezekiel 4:6 says,

n••• / have appointed thee each day for a year. II

And Numbers 14:34 says,

"... each day for a year ... II

So, JIl of the commentators, be they Pentecostal, Protestant,

Catholic-whatever their denominational affiliation - all agree that in
Daniel 9, the 490 days are actually 490 years. Then you go to
Revelation 2: 10, the Verse where Jesus says to the church of Smyrna,

"... ye shall have tribulation ten days ... /I

And read what the commentaries say. They all agree that this refers
to the Diocletian persecution which lasted exactly ten years from 303
A.D. to 313 A.D. Any book on the persecution of the church by the
Roman Empire will list the persecution of Dioclelian as the most.
horrendous persecution launched by the Romans against the
Christian church. And it lasted ten years. No wonder Jesus said to
the church of that time, "...ye shall have tribulation ten days .." They
understood the formula, I have given thee "each day for a year."

Now, ::IS we come to the prophecy of Daniel 7 and to the prophecy of

Revelation 13, everything will come together. Let me establish very
clearly in your mind that the little horn of Daniel 7 is the same power
The ltca«! or Ne'L·c/t1(iOll.13

lklt is r cprcscnl cd hy the beast of Revelation 13. Notice what it says

ill Hl:\'l'l:dioll U::i,

';t nd l here U'(I.'; yitJclI II lito him" (speaking of this beast of Revelation
13) Ita mouth speakinq qreat thlnqs ..• "

John is quoting verbatim Daniel 7. Now, in Daniel 7 who "speaks

great llungs"? The little horn. But in Revelation 13 who "speaks
grclltlllillgs"? The beast, don't you see? Now, we go on a little further
and notice, il tells you what "speak great things" means. It says in
verse 5, [Revelation 1:31.

"And there was gillen unto him a mouth speaking great things and
blasphemies ... "

So, when yo u "speak great things" against the Most High, you are
speaking blasphemies. And then it goes on,

"... power was gl"en unto him to continue forty and two months."

Now, here we have a statement, "forty and two months.· It's not much
different from the statement in Daniel where it says "seventy weeks"
[Daniel 9:241. And when you read 70 weeks, nobody sits down and
tries to figure that out in terms of literal weeks of seven days. They
all realize that the 70 weeks are 490 days and that the days represent
years. Now, here it says that this beast was to "continue forty and
two months." Now, how many days are there in 42 months? Well,
there are 30 days to a Bible month, and by simply comparing this
chapter with other chapters, for instance Revelation 11, you will find
that the 42 months are 1260 symbolic days. The days are symbolic
of what? Years. We're talking about the same period of time!
Whereas Daniel says the little horn will reign for 1260 days or 42
months, John says it's the beast that's going to reign during that
period of time.

Now, let's ~o II litllc further. Verse 7 is the clincher. It says:

"Aiul it WIlS qiren IIl1tO him 10 make war with the saints ... II

Why friends, th:1I is all exact quotation of what Daniel says in chapter
7, verse 21 of liis honk. It says he will make "war with the saints."
So, we're saying the same thing. And friends, it's clear that this little
horn is the beast of Revelation 13. It says that it would "speak great
things" against the Most l ligh. It says that they both would "make
war with the saints." And they would both reign for the same period
of limc. And, of course, this little horn or this beast of Revelation 13
must be in Western Europe because, notice, it has "the mouth of a
lion, the fcet of a bear, the body of a leopard," and how many horns?
Ten horns. Now, where are the ten horns coming up? In Western
Europe. And this beast is right there and has the ten horns
surrounding it. And so, we find that just like Daniel, John agrees.
This beast is among the ten, right there in Western Europe. And, of
course, it does arise alter the ten, as we'll see.

Notice that the horns have crowns on them. "He has ten horns with
ten crowns." So, during the time when this beast is arising, the
nations of Europe have become kingdoms. Now, friends, today not
many of those nations are kingdoms. They're democracies. But then
those horns had crowns on them. They were kingdoms: the kingdom
of France, the kingdom of England, the kingdom of Germany, the
kingdom of Spain. Obviously, these 1260 years begin after the fall of
the Homan Empire, after the ten, when the last of the three were
subdued. Remember he had to subdue three of the first horns: the
IIcruli, the Vandals, and the Ostrogoths. And the Ostrogoths were
subdued in 538 A.D. lt was in 538 that Belisarius, Justinian's general,
carne from Constantinople to defeat the Oslrogolhs at the bequest of
this beast or little horn power. And it did indeed defeat the last of
these three horns in 538. That began the 1260-year prophecy or the
42-month period that brings us down to the time of the end. Look at
it, friends. Don't you see? Daniel said this little horn would arise
"after the ten" when the last of the three would be subdued in 538.
It would continue for 1260 symbolic days or years and then it says,

"... the judqment shall sit ... 1/ [Daniel 7:26]

Obviously, this prophecy has to span the history of Europe. Thank

God that Daniel doesn't have any blind spots. He said Babylon would
arise, then Mcdo-Per s!a, then Greece, then Rome. He explained that
ten nations would arise in Europe and that another kingdom would
arise ill Europe as well. This kingdom would be very different; it
would be diverse. It would come up in Western Europe after the fall

of tile I~OIll;lIl EIlIJ ire. It would be established as a kingdom when the

last of l lrc llu cc lio n is were subdued. It would have a man at the
head who w()uld "speak ~rcat things" or "blasphemies." What does
it l11eJII to speak blasphemy? Well, let me just give you two
dcfinitious. When Jesus said, in John 10:30,

"I and my Father are one."

The Jews accused Ilim of blasphemy, Of course, it wasn't blasphemy

for Jesus, for Ilc was tl ie Word of Cod. But He said in John 10:32
and 33,

which of those works do ye slone me? The Jews answered

".. .Ior
him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy;
and because that thou, being a man, makest Ihyself God. II

Friends, when a man takes the litles and attributes of Cod to himself,
he commits blasphemy. Furthermore, in Luke 5:21, when a man
claims the authority to forgive sins he has committed blasphemy.
Remember, JCSLlSsaid in Luke 5:20,

fI••• Man, thy sins are Iorqinen thee."

And they thought He had spoken blasphemy. Then He said, "But

look, I'm the Son of man. And I have power on earth to forgive sin-
[paraphrased]. But they said, [Luke 5:21],

fI••• Who is this that speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins,
but Cod alone?"

In fact, the Bible says,

This little horn power was going to make war on the saints. It woulJ
be intnlcranl of religf ous views different from its own. It would make
war 011 the saints. And it would even think to change Coo's holy law.
Now what law arc we talking about? Not the law of Moses. Remember
that tile law of Moses was nailed to the cross. We're talking about
God's law. Cod's law where He says, "Thou shalt not make unto thee
any graven image ...or bow thyself down to them ..." [Exodus 20:4, 51.

What happened during the Middle Ages, friends? Wasn't there a

change of that law that took place? Why is it that during the Middle
Ages idolatry was rampant even in the church? Because what Paul
said would happen, had happened. There had to come a "falling
away."

Now, it's amazing. I talk to people who are still looking for the "falling
away." They say, "Oh, Paul said there'll come a falling away first and
the mall of sin will be revealed" [2 Thessalonians 2:31. But, friends,
when did Paul say that falling away would take place? I'll read you
OIlC text. Acts 20:28 and 29,

"Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over
which the /loly Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church
of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. For I know
this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among
you, not sparing the flock. /I

Whcn did he say this would happen? "After my departing: Paul

knew that after he'd died, even then there would be a falling away.
In fact, 1 John 2: 18 makes it clear that Paul was right.

"Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that

antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrlsts;
whereby we knout that it is the last time. /I

Now, John wrote that after Paul died. In 2 Thessalonians 2:7 Paul
had already said,

"the mystery of iniquity doth already work ... II

The mystery of iniquity was already at work even while Paul was alive.
Already there was heresy and John, after Paul died, confirmed what

They were Christians and yet "they went out from us." There's the
"fLlllill~ away" that Paul was talking abouL And Paul said the mystery
of iniquity was already at work. And so it was, even then, getting
started. John said it was gelling started. In fact, he says, "even now
are the re many all Iicl: risls."

Let me tell you what the word "antichrist" means. I have with me my
Greek New Testament and in the back of this little Greek New
Testament is a lexicon. Under the word "anti," in the word
"antichrislos" you will find what the word actually means. Here it is.
('II read il Io you. The word "anti" means instead of, in the place of,
ill behalf ot. Friends, the "anlichristos," or the antichrist that John
is tal k in~ ahout, a re men who set themselves up in the place of Christ,
instead of Christ. They take the place of ChrisL That's what the word
"anti" means. Now think it through. Paul says that this "falling away
will take place," a "man of sin will be revealed," and that these men
will scl themselves up in tile temple of Cod. And he says, "the mystery
of iniquity datil al ready work." He says this was already happening.
But one lhing wJS hindering. It was the fall of the Roman Empire.

Now, friends, let's just be clear on this. I know a lot of people are
looking for a temple over ill Jerusalem. nut would that temple in
Jerusalem bc "the temple of God"? God has no building on earth
today that call hc called the temple of Cod. When Jesus died the veil
of the temple was "rent ill twain from the top to the bottom ..."
I~1:11t hew 27:51\ and C(iL! hJS never had a building on earth since that
time tl';lt lie's called l lis temple. In fact, Paul says in 1 Corinthians
]: ](i,

"... yc arc the temple of God... "

And according to the New Testament, the only things on earth that
CJIl he considered the temple of God are the church, which is the body
of Chi isl, and your body which is the temple of the l loly Ghost, Now,
the church was indeed infiltrated at a very early time. We know that
there WJS a falling away. Paul said, •After my death there will be a
fallillg away and grievous wolves shall come in" [Acts 20:29,
paraphrased]. John says yes, "even now there are many antichrists."
And friends, what took place? John, in 1 John 5:21 says,

"Little children, keep yourselves (rom idols. /I

Keep yourselves from idols. Can you imagine John having to warn
the church of his day to stay away from idols? Friends, they knew
beller than that, didn't they? God had said, "Thou shalt not make
unto thee any graven image ...or bow thyself down to them ...• [Exodus
20:4,5].

But you see, the "falling away" was already happening. We're talking
history. These are things "which must shortly come to pass." God
told John not to seal the book because the "time is at hand." Friends,
it has started happening. It's not in the future. We're living in the
end of history, and a lot of this has already taken place.

This beast, or lillie horn, in Western Europe after the fall of the Roman
Empire, becomes a kingdom. It subdues three of the first horns and
in 538 begins its reign. It has a man at the head. It's a different type
of power, not just a political power but a religious power. Notice, it
"speaks great things." It gets into religion. Revelation 13 says that
the whole world worships [wondered after] the beast [Revelation
13:3]. It specifically says in verse 4,

"And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast:
and they worshipped the beast, saying, l¥ho is like unto the beast?
who is able to make war with him?"

So, this is a power, this is a system that men worship. And then it
says lie would make war on the saints [verse 7]. This kingdom and
the men at the head of this kingdom would make war on the saints.
lie would think to change God's law [Daniel 7:25, paraphrased].
That's why idolatry carne in. It was creeping in, even in the days of
the apostles. But really, it wasn't until Rome was converted that it

1'.lge :W
came ill lull fOICC. Remember when Constantine was "converted"?
lIe turned over all those pJgJIl - or as many as he could - temples to
the Clu isti.uis. Aile! rather than throw out the statues, they just
changed tile names. And so paganism invaded Christianity. It was to
continue for 12(;0 years, after which what was to happen? In
Revelation 13: 10 it says that after 42 months,

"lie that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that

killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword ..• "

So, this beast was to receive a deadly wound after the 1260 years.
Now, you're going to say, "Well, then, what's still to come?" The
deadly wound is still to be healed [Revelation 13: 12]. I believe we're
seeing it healed even now. That deadly wound is being healed and
this power - and there's only one that fils - is once again becoming
a political force in the world, just as it was during the Middle Ages.
Now, who is this beast of Revelation 13?

I have here a book called Fox's Book of ~1artyrs and it identifies who
this beast is. In (act, I brought with me a book called The Prophetic
Faith of the Fathers. If you are interested, I can show you from this
very book that what I am going to say about this beast of Revelation
13 is the exact belief that John Calvin, Martin Luther, and Wesley, the
founder of the Methodist and the United Church, understood about
the beast of Revelation 13. Zwingli, Jerome, Huss, Wycliffe, Tyndall,
in fact all of the reformers understood who this beast of Revelation
13 was. They didn't understand all of the details, and of course they
couldn't see beyond their days. We're living even further down in
time so we see much more than they could see, but friends, they knew
who this power is.

There's only one kingdom, one system, that fits all of the identifying
marks. In fact, you could take these clues, go down to the library,
and if the librarian is worth her salt, you could ask her about these
clues and look through the history books and you would match up
everyone of these clues. And you'd find that there's only one
killgdolll, and it is (/ kinqdtnn, that arose in Western Europe after the
f:1I1or the HOI1l:lIl Empire. along with the ten. It was this kingdom
and the man at the IlC~Hlof this kingdom that subdued the l leruli, the
Vandals .u ul the' Ostrngllths because they would not submit to his
llulhOlity ill tl'li~;i()lIs tllill~;S. They would not submit to his dogmas
and his teachings, and so they were uprooted. This was a different
type 01 power. It was a religious as well as a political power. It did
indeed speak "great things." It also "made war on the saints." It
changeJ God's law. I have with me a catechism; in this catechism you
will find that the commandment that says, "Thou shalt not make unto
thee any graven image ...or bow thyself down to them ..." is missing.
It's gone. It's not there. This power reigned for 1260 days, from 538
down to 1798 when General Berthier, Napoleon's general, rode into
the city where this power was established and which the Bible
pinpoints very clearly. lie took this power captive, took the man at
the head of this system into captivity. He who had taken men into
captivity during the Inquisition when he made war on the saints, was
taken into captivity. That system which had killed with the sword was
itself killed by the sword. But friends, in these last days, the deadly
wound is being healed.

Now, who is that system? Well, let me quote to you from Fox's Book
of f\Llrt\,rs, page 43: "We come now to a period when persecution,
under the guise of Christianity, committed more enormities than ever
disgraced the annals of paganism. Disregarding the maxims and spirit
of the Gospel, the papal Church, arming herself with the power of the
sword, vexed the Church of God and wasted it for several centuries,
a period most appropriately termed in history, the 'Dark Ages.' The
kings of the earth gave their power to the 'Beast,' and submitted to
be trodden on by the miserable vermin that often filled the papal
chair. "

Now, friends, let me say something so that I will not be misunderstood.

Babylon was a beast [the lion of Daniel 7] but Nebuchadnezzar, who
was the man at the head of this beast system, we're going to meet in
the kingdom of God. Now, he was the man at the head of the beast
system. We talked about Cyrus. lie was the man at the head of this
beast [the bear of Daniel 7:5]. And yet the Bible said Cyrus is mine
anointed and shall fulfil all my will [Isaiah 44:28, paraphrased].
Friends, I believe we're going to see Cyrus in the kingdom of God.
Are we saying that because a system is a beast everyone who is a part
of it is condemned to hell? No. Remember, there will be many
Babylonians in the kingdom of God. There will be many Persians and
Mcdcs in the kingdom of God. Read about the Day of Pentecost, On
the [\JY of Pentecost, there were people [there] from these different
71w Ileus! of Rcrclution 13

nalions. TIICIL:were Jews who were citizens of these systems and yet
Ihcy rcrcivcd the l loly Spi ri t and became a part of the church of God.
\ViII l hrr c he 110 Creeks ill the kingdom of God? Read the New
Testament. Ci ccce was called a beast [Daniel 7:6], and yet among the
Creeks were Christians. lIere we have the fourth beast, Rome [Daniel
7:71. Arc we saying that all Romans are condemned to hell? Friends,
we're talking about this beast; we're talking about the horn [Daniel
7:81. But listen, everybody in this room is part of a beast or part of a
horn. If you're American, you're part of an eagle-beast. If you're
Canadian, you're part of the beaver-beast. You see, every system here
is represented by a beast, The horns were the French, the Germans,
the Spanish, the English. We're all a bunch of horns. Are we saying
that because we're part of a horn system we're hell-bound? No. You
see, everyone of us was born into some nation, into some system.
But the thing is, we must be born-again [John 3:3].

And so, by talking about this beast and by saying that, yes, this beast
of Revelation 13 represents the Papacy or the papal power, remember,
there is a man at the head of this system. The pope is the man at the
head of the papal system. nut we're not talking about individuals.
We're talking about the system [a mingling of church and state].
We're not condemning individuals. We are talking about a system.
And God says don't follow the system. In fact, He doesn't want us
following any system. lie wants us to follow His Word. Now, if the
system you're following is following the Word of Cod, praise the Lord.
More power to you. But the fact of the matter is that this was revealed
so that we, as people, would not-follow a beast, but instead follow the
"Lamb of God which taketh away the sins of the world" [John 1:29].
It says this beast would. "speak great words against the most High."
And I'm going to close with some of these statements. In fact, they
are shocking - to "speak great things against the most High." Listen
to what I am reading [rom the Catholic Ecclesiastical Dictionary in
the at ticlc "The Pope." "The pope is of so great dignity and so exalted
that he is not a mcre man; but as it were Cod and the Vicar of Cod.
l lc is likewise the Divine Monarch and Supreme Emperor and King
of kil1~s, so tklt if it were possible that the angels might err in the
f(lith, or Illi~ht think contrary to the faith, they could be judged and
C)O;COlll11111rlicJtcJby tile pope."
"

Now, let till' t'(';ld you auothcr quotation. In the Authority of the
Coullcils, volume 2, p;q.~c 2G6 says, •All names which in Scriptures
are appl icd to Christ, by virtue of which it is established that I Ie is
over the church, all the same names are applied to the pope."

Anothc r quote from the Great Encycl ical Letter of Pope Leo XlJ) says,
"We hold, upon this earth, the place of God Almighty." Now friends,
that's speaking great things.

Here's one more quotation from The History of the Councils, volume
14, column 109. This is spoken to the pope upon his coronation: "For
thou art the Shepherd, thou art the Physician, thou art the Governor,
thou art the Husbandman: finally, thou art another God on Earth."
[The Fifth Lateran Council, 1512].

Friends, I don't have to go any further. There's only one system that
fils all the identifying marks. It's the only power that came up among
the ten in Western Europe. The Papacy arose in Rome, a city that
you know is very prominent in the book of Revelation. The Bible says
it was to arise "after the ten," after the fall of the Roman Empire. Il
was only when Caesar had left Rome, and the Roman Empire had
collapsed, that the Papacy could indeed become a political power in
Western Europe. So, it did not become "a horn" until 538 when indeed
it was already in the area of We stern Europe, for Paul said the mystery
of iniquity was already at work and even then "the falling away" was
beginning to happen. Yes, it became a horn at that time. It subdued
three. The Ileruli, the Vandals, and the Ostrogoths were subdued at
the bequest of the Papacy because they would not submit to his
authority. The man at the head, of course, is the pope. It's a different
type of power. It's religious as well as political. It spoke "great
things" and blasphemies; that we've confirmed. It "made war with
the saints." Read about the Inquisitions. Read about the great
burnlngs and where the saints, the martyrs, were beheaded and
burned at the stake for believing much of what we believe today, or
because they wanted to publish the Bible in their writings, etc. This
power would "make war with the saints." Yes, indeed it did. It
changed God's law, did away with the commandment on idolatry, and
idolatry filled the church at that time. And it reigned for 1260 years,
from 5:18 down to 1798 when it lost its political power. l3ut friends,
look at what's happening today. The deadly wound is being healed.
It's being healed; and we know that the Bible talks about a world-wide
counterfeit Christianity that's coming. And friends, what powers will
be involved in that which is yet to come? Much of history will be
repeated.
