1. Compare and contrast the concept of development “As A Condition and As A Process.

Development is a process that creates growth, progress, positive change or the addition of
physical, economic, environmental, social and demographic components.  The purpose of
development is a rise in the level and quality of life of the population, and the creation or
expansion of local regional income and employment opportunities, without damaging the
resources of the environment.  Development is visible and useful, not necessarily immediately,
and includes an aspect of quality change and the creation of conditions for a continuation of that
change.

Also, is not an easy process, and is not a one shot process. It is more realistic to believe
that development is a long process, requiring hard work and sustained effort of working and
solving economic problem. As we are now in this digital age, where everything is instant, where
in just a click of a finger, a wink of an eye, or just a press of a button or a click of a laptop
mouse, you can have everything you wish in your front at an instance, many become impatient to
achieve development.

The concept of development as a state or condition static is refers to the economy of a

country or the economical standing of a country. Development as a process it means a progress
or the step and ways to improve their economic stability. Its the method they use to improve their
economy by following three aspects. First, raising peoples’ living levels, i.e. incomes and
consumption, levels of food, medical services, and education through relevant growth processes.
Simply stated, if an ordinary family can provide the basic necessities (food, clothing, shelter) in
life, then more or less, they are able to enjoy a dignified life. If they are physically stable, they
become productive, find a decent means of livelihood, send their children to school, and
therefore achieve a better quality of life. Second, creating conditions conducive to the growth of
peoples’ self-esteem through the establishment of social, political and economic systems and
institutions which promote human dignity and respect. According the Maslow’s Hierarchy of
Needs, if the basic needs are satisfied, they develop self-esteem and become more assertive, such
that the more they contribute to the betterment not only of his family, but the community he
belongs and the country at large. Lastly, increasing peoples’ freedom to choose by enlarging the
range of their choice variables, e.g. varieties of goods and services. This implies that they are
able to enjoy freedom, giving them the chance to choose from better alternatives. Hence, they
will not settle for less, and so they aspire more.

Concept development as condition refers to the economic growth, it does not take
account on the qualitative aspect of development. Its refers as to the traditional approaches to see
the development as simply as economic growth that substitute to the economic development.
While concept of development as process are not an economic phenomenon but a multi-
dimensional process that involves change or reorganizations, reorientation of the economic and
social system, in which improves the way of living of a person, human conditions, such as
reduction or elimination of poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, inequality, disease, and
exploitation. Its make people more accountable for their own needs and not to defend on others
or in their governments. It makes the core of the economy or its citizens to be more responsible
to choose their trustworthy leaders to lead and guide them for the best future and best economical
standing for their futures.
