Algebra Worksheet Grade VI

Group Activity.

1) Try this on a group of pupils

Think of a number between 1 and 10 .

Add 4.

Multiply the result by 5.

Double your answer.

Divide the result by 10.

Take away the number you first thought of.

Write down your answer.

However many times you try this, the answer is 4.

Investigate what happens when you use numbers other than whole numbers between 1 and10. Try,
for example, large whole numbers, decimals, negative whole numbers and fractions.

Is the answer always 4?

Try to use the algebra you have learned to explain your answer.

2) Write algebraic expressions for the following:

a. Ms .Jensen likes to divide her class into 4 groups.

b. A company has $1000 to distribute to its employees .How much will each employee get.

c. An electrician gets $45 per hour and he spends $20 per day . His earnings per day will be-----
d. Each piece of candy costs 30 cents. The cost of h pieces is $2.00.

e. Peter made a withdrawal of d dollars from his savings account. His old balance was $350 and
his new balance is $ 280.
f. A large pizza of 15 slices is shared among p students so that each student gets 3 slices.

g Eric had a balance of $195 in his account before he got his salary. His current account shows
$4200. What is Eric’s salary ?

Solve the following

3) If 1/2is subtracted from a number and the different is multiplied by 4 , the result is 20. What is
thenumber?

4)In a class of 42 students the number of girls is 5/2 of the boys. Find the number of boys in the
class.

5) The total cost of 4 tables and 3 chairs is Rs.1035. If a table cost Rs.40 more than a chair, find
the price of each.

6) Two equal sides of an isosceles triangle are each 2 cm more than the third side. If the perimeter
of the triangle is 73 cm, find the length of its sides.

7) Answer the following:

(a) Take Sarita’s present age to be y years

(i) What will be her age 5 years from now?

(ii) What was her age 3 years back?

(iii) Sarita’s grandfather is 6 times her age. What is the age of her grandfather?

(iv) Grandmother is 2 years younger than grandfather. What is grandmother’s age?

(v) Sarita’s father’s age is 5 years more than 3 times Sarita’s age. What is her father’s age?

8) An electrician charges $45 per hour and spends $20 a day on gasoline.
Write an algebraic expression to represent his earnings for one day.
9) a) The formula for C in terms of n is C = 3n+4.
