Olympus and Panasonic are one of the oldest and most diversified companies in the world.
Formed around the same time, both of these companies started at the grassroots level and
went onto become a major international player in their own respective industries.
Olympus, started off in 1919 in Japan, is a major manufacturer in the optics industry. It
entered the camera manufacturing scene way back in 1936 with its Semi-Olympus model
making it one of the oldest company still in camera production. From then on the company
has gone on to produce Four Thirds system of cameras, releasing the first of its line in 2003.
Panasonic on the other hand is relatively a newer entry in the camera industry releasing their
first line of cameras under the brand name Lumix in 2001. The models DMC-LC5 and DMC-
F7, although now discontinued, were well received for their compact size. One of the most
notable achievements of Panasonic in the digital camera field is its introduction of Micro
Four Thirds system designed for digital cameras in 2008 in collaboration with Olympus and
was an upgrade to the original Four Thirds system.
Although they collaborated in their line of Micro Four Third systems of camera the
companies have since then taken their own line of production and have come out with the
latest products, which by some have been considered to be industrial leaders.
