OVERVIEW :
APPLICATION :
• VERTEX Universal Testing Machine is designed for testing metals and other materials under tension,
compression bending, transverse and shear loads. Hardness test on metals can also be conducted.
Principal of Operation :
• Operation of the machines is by hydraulic transmission of load from the test specimen to a separately housed
load indicator. The hydraulic system is ideal since it replaces transmission of load through levers and knife
edges, which are prone to wear and damage due to shock on rupture of test pieces.
• Load is applied by a hydrostatically lubricated ram. Main cylinder pressure is transmitted to the cylinder of the
pendulum dynamometer system housed in the control panel. The cylinder of the dynamometer is also of self-
lubricating design. The load transmitted to the cylinder of the dynamometer is transferred through a lever
system to a pendulum. Displacement of the pendulum actuates the rack and pinion mechanism which operates
the load indicator pointer and the autographic recorder. The deflection of the pendulum represent the absolute
load applied on the test specimen.
•
Return movement of the pendulum is effectively damped to absorb energy in the event of sudden
breakage of a specimen.
Machine consists of :
Straining Unit
• This consists of a hydraulic cylinder motor with chain and sprocket drive and a table coupled with the
ram of the hydraulic cylinder, mounted on to a robust base. The cylinder and the ram are individually
lapped to eliminate friction. The upper cross-head is connected to two screwed columns which are
• An elongation scale with a minimum graduation of 1 mm, is provided to measure the deformation
of the specimen.
• Tension test is conducted by gripping the test specimen between the upper and lower cross-heads,
Compression, transverse, bending, shear and hardness tests are conducted between the lower cross
• The lower cross-head can be raised or lowered rapidly by operating the screwed columns thus
facilitating ease of fixing of the test specimen.
Control Panel :
• The control Panel consists of a power pack complete with drive motor and an oil tank, control valves a
pendulum dynamometer a load indicator system and an autographic recorder.
Power Pack :
• The power pack generates the maximum pressure of 200 kgf/cm2 the hydraulic pump provides continuously
non-pulsating oil flow. Hence the load application is very smooth
Hydraulic Controls :
•
Hand operates wheels are used to control the flow to and from the hydraulic cylinder. The regulation of oil flow
is infinitely variable incorporated in the hydraulic system is a regulating valve which maintains a practically
constant rate of piston movement. Control by this valve allows extensometer readings to be taken.
• This system consists of a large dial and a pointer. A dummy pointer is provided to register the
maximum load reached during the test. Different measuring ranges can be selected by operating the
range selection knob. An overload trip switch is incorporated which automatically cuts out the pump
motor when the load range in use is exceeded.
Pendulum Dynamometer :
• This unit permits selection of favorable hydraulic ratios producing relatively small frictional forces. Pressurized
oil in the loading cylinder pushes up the measuring piston proportionately and actuates the special
dynamometer system. The piston is constantly rotated to eliminate friction. The dynamometer system is also
provided with an integral damper and ensures high reliability of operation. The load transmitted to the
dynamometer is transferred through a pendulum to the load indicator.
• This unit is of the pen and drum type and is supplied as standard. The horizontal motion of the pen
produces the load ordinate of the diagram and the drum rotation produces the extension ordinates
in the ration of either 1:5 or 1:10.
• AII VERTEX Universal Testing Machines are closely controlled for sensitivity, accuracy and calibration during
every stage of manufacture. Every machine is then calibrated over each of its measuring ranges in accordance
with the procedure laid down in BS : 1610 : Part 1 :1992 and IS 1828 : (Part 1) : 1991.
•
VERTEX Universal Testing Machines comply with Grade "A" of BS : 1610 : Part 1:1992 and class 1 of IS 1828 :
(Part1) : 1991 An accuracy of + 1.0% is guaranteed from 20% from 20% of the load range selected to full load.
Below 20% of the selected range, the maximum permissible error is 0.2% of the full load reading.

OVERVIEW :
• 'DT' Portable Rockwell Hardness Tester is developed to meet the demands of a light weight instrument
which can be used to carry out tests by a universally recognised method of Hardness testing.
ROCKWELL METHOD :
• This hardness tester can be used in variety of applications and is readialy adjustable to a wide
ange of sizes and shapes which are difficult to test in a standard table model hardness tester.
• he machine is designed for carrying out Rockwell tests comparable to table model hardness tester because,
the basic things, such as shape of penetrator, method of penetration, measurement and loads
are same in both systems.
• The photograph on the back side gives the general arrangement of the hardness tester.
• The system carries a weight bar (8) pivoted at central point.
• When the load is applied by the loading screw (9), at one end of this weigh bar, it is deflected and the other
end of this bar carrying penetrator forces down into the test specimen.
• This deflection of weight bar which is proportional to the applied load is indicated on the loading dial
indicator
• Besides this loading dial indicator, here is one penetration measuring indicator (14) which measures the
actual penetration of the penterator into the test specimen is read directly on this indicator.
• The frame carries two adjusting screws and gear train. By rotating the knurled knob the distance between
the penetrator and the support-anvil can be adjusted
1) Upper Camp
2) Lower Clamp
3) Support Anvil
4) Adjusting Screws

METHOD OF
1) Select proper penetrator
2) Take precaution so thet the penetrator does not project beyond the Upper clamp (1).
For this, the loading screw (9) should be sufficiently taken back.
3) Place the test specimen securely on suitable anvil (3).
4) Clamp test specimen firmly between upper clamp (1) and support anvil (3) by rotating the
knurled knob (5) on the lower clamp (2). DO NOT APPLY EXTRA PRESSURE.
5) Check zero setting load indicator(11). Rotate bezel to bring pointer over small black dot for zero load.
6) Apply 10 kgf (98.07 N). major load by rotating the load screw (9) in clockwise direction such that the pointer
on the load indentor (11) comes on set position.
7) Check zero setting of penetrator indicator (14). Rotate bezel to bring pointer to ‘O’ on the black scale.
8) For ‘C’ scale use diamond penetrator against load of 150 kgf (1471 N) and for ‘A’ scale use same
diamond penetrator against a load of 60 kgf (588.4 N).
For ‘B’ scale use 1/16 ball penetrator against a load of 100 kgf (980.7 N).
9) Take off major load by turning the loading screw in anticlockwise direction, such that only minor
load of 10 kgf. (98.07) remains in action – (pointer back to ‘set’ position).
10) Hardness value in Rockwell scale is directly indicated on the penetrator indicator (14).
Read of number on black scale is diamond penetrator.
Read off number on red scale is ball penetrator
11) Release load completely by taking back the loading screw (9).
12) Turn the knurled knob (5) in anticlockwise direction to loosen clamp and thus the test speciman.
