 Identify the electrical requirements for HVDC lines.
 Identify the components used in AC to DC conversion

 Understand the differences between classic HVDC and new HVDC technology

After studying this course, students will be able to:
Identify driving factors behind the resurgence of HVDC.
Recognize the best strategies for stakeholder engagement, communication, and
outreach programs for HVDC projects.
 Examine how an actual utility operates its existing, successful HVDC system.
 Review the impact FERC rulemaking has on HVDC transmission projects.
 Examine the policy and regulatory attitudes toward HVDC.
 Discuss replacing existing AC transmission with a new DC system and the associated
benefits of making the switch.
 Recognize the benefits of using HVDC as a transmission method for on- and offshore
wind projects.
 Evaluate the use of superconductors within a HVDC system.
 Recognize the technical planning issues associated with HVDC.
