The dolphin family

Dolphins and killer whales, which are the largest members of the dolphin
family, have recently become popular entertainers. They are friendly and
intelligent. They seem to have a great sense of humor and they are able to
perform wonderful tricks.
Winnie, a killer whale in Greenville Safari Park, performs three times a day.
She does a series of tricks. For example, she climbs out of her pool, blows a
trumpet, and swims around with a pair of sunglasses on her head. “ Of course,
it is commercial,” says her trainer. “But they enjoy performing tricks. ”
However, a number of scientists believe that keeping dolphins and killer whales
in captivity shortens their lives and that performing the same tricks every day
is not good for them.
Dolphins do not have a problem-free existence in the wild. Many thousands are
killed when they are caught in commercial fishermen’s nets which are intended
to catch tuna. But despite this danger, most dolphins live for more than thirty
years in the wild. In captivity, however, most die before their twelfth (12 th)
birthday. Although killer whales can live for as long as thirty-five years in the
wild, they live an average of only two or three years in captivity.
A Swiss professor says, “Basically, you are always going to have problems when
you keep animals in small spaces when they are used to being free. ”
