4. Use your pie charts to answer the following questions:
19
- In which quarter did Food2Go receive the "Excellent" ratings overall
percentage wise? Quarter 4 (almost 50% of overall ratings from looking at the
pie chart)

- In which quarter did they receive the lowest/highest proportion of "Terrible"

ratings? Lowest - Q4 (0%), Highest - Q1 (6%)

- In which quarter(s) did "Excellent" or "Good" ratings exceed 50% of the total
ratings? Q1, Q3 and Q4.
- In which quarter did they receive the least negative reviews overall? Quarter
4

5. Reflect on the difference that different pie styles and formatting styles have
in terms of visual appeal, ability to read/interpret, accuracy of data etc.

Sample thoughts:
- It is difficult to derive precise figures from a pie chart unless it has segment
labels.
- Pie charts can be used for comparison based on proportion/percentage. We
cannot get the total number of ratings per quarter from a pie chart.
- A single pie chart is easier to read when colours can be differentiated easily.
- A pie chart should include a legend or segments should be labeled.
- We can make our pie chart easier to interpret by using colours that suit each
other, appropriate font style/colour/size.
- A chart title helps the audience understand what the pie chart shows
immediately.
- If we use a "bar of bar" or "bar of pie", we should add data labels to make
the chart meaningful.

your choice to capture the trends for each rating category over the year.

Instructions
Check your line chart against the chart on the right. They should be similar:

1. Your chart should have the following colours for each rating category line:
Excellent - Purple
Good - Blue
Average - Green
Bad - Yellow
Terrible Red

2. Your chart must have an appropriate title.

e.g. "Year 2017"
3. Your chart should use appropriate axis titles. (You can add axis titles through 'Chart
Layout')
X-Axis label - "Quarter" (you can indicate a year if your wish.
Y-Axis label - Number of Ratings (a rotated title is often the best option for y-axis)
4. Use your chart to write one sentence for each rating category to explain the trend over t
year.
Sample answers:
- Excellent - Although the number of "excellent" ratings dipped in the second quarter, it then
increased rapidly during Q3 and again during Q4. The rate of increase in Q4 was slightly lowe
than Q3 as we can see from the slope of the line.
- Good - The number of "Good" rating dipped in Q2, but then increased rapidly (highest rate
increase overall) over Q3. They continued to increase in Q4 at a similar rate to "excellent"
ratings.
- Average - Average ratings increased from Q1 to Q2 and declined over the second half of the
year.
- Bad - "Bad" ratings have decreased steadily over the year and Q4 saw a total of about 10
"bad" ratings".
- Terrible - The number of "terrible ratings fell between Q1 and Q2 and then steadily declined
over the second half of the year, with 0 "terrible" ratings received in Q4.

5. Have you used a new worksheet for your chart? Is it the worksheet tab named "Line
Chart"?
Check that your source data is referenced correctly by editing data in your table. Does it auto
update correctly?
Food for thought!
- You can add gridlines to make your chart easier to read.
- You can change the position of your legend by right-clicking on it. (Positioning it at the - top
bottom gives your chart more space)
- You can experiment with the chart layout and try using different data labels along your line
(e.g. series name, values)
- Change the chart type of an existing chart. Does it make the chart easier to interpret?
