MODULE 1

ACTIVITY 1
Write at least three (3) reasons why we need to study the Philippine Contemporary Arts.
1. Bringing Contemporary Arts into school even in our society, it will enable educators or
teachers to promote curiosity, encourage dialogue, and initiate debate about the world and
the issues that affect our lives. As we know, Contemporary Arts mirrors contemporary
culture and society, offering people (which specifically teachers, students and general
audiences) a rich resource through which to consider current ideas and rethink the
familiar. It brings curiosity, openness and dialogue to the people as they examined the
artwork whether it is good or bad, they ignite discussion and start debate about their
appreciation and interpretation to the artwork connection to their beliefs, ideals and social
values. As student, it will broaden our understanding (in our country as the arts reflect the
country most times) and develop our skills (interpreting the artwork as it carries a hidden
denotation).

2. As Contemporary Arts known as based on truth and hidden realities, that depict culture
and society, it allows us (students) to know influence of the situation in our country that
led to the creation of the artwork. That’s maybe the reason why the artworks are seen and
kept in museum, Artwork comments on the current sociopolitical and pop culture climate,
it also becomes a visual historical record of life. This is a record that contains not only the
facts such as dates and names, but the feelings that were held by people at the time. There
is a reason that art is so often carefully preserved, it gives a unique lens to the past that

cannot just be read about in history books. Now as a student, studying it will enable me to
understand that contemporary art is part of a cultural dialogue that concerns larger
frameworks, such as ideas about beauty, personal and cultural identity, family,
community, and nationality.

3. Having same inspiration to form art with by different artist, they express their own
expression that in the end, they present different perspective on the situation. Matter the
fact that contemporary art known as abstract expressionism. Having said that, as a student
who will study contemporary arts, it openly allows us the chance to observe and reflects
someone's feelings, ideas or perspectives. It gradually exposed us to stimuli that can
provoke thoughts and even emotions. That will surely lead to new information,
education, and growth.

4. Contemporary Art deserves our respect. The artistic era that we are currently in is
incredibly important. In fact, it may be the most important era that there ever has been in
art. By creating new pieces through postmodernism, abstract expressionism, and pop art,
we are doing an incredible job of holding up a mirror to science, philosophy, and society.
There has never been a time where art is more important than it is now (which is decried
by every generation.) So, studying and knowing how to preserve such treasure will be a
big help in our country to maintain the artwork that has history on itself.

5. Lastly, studying it allow us to have an opportunity to expand our horizon and immerse
our self to a new knowledge. We may be able to know some famous contemporary
filipino artist (Ernest Concepcion, Ronald Ventura, Oscar Villamiel, etc.) As we may
learn that every artwork has its aesthetic value. As it is not only giving us impression but
also inspiration in our life as it depicts life. It also made connection to our curriculum and
support interdisciplinary thinking.
