Duration : 2 Hours No. of Questions = 6
Date of Exam : 10/03/2019 (AN)
Note:
1. Please follow all the Instructions to Candidates given on the cover page of the answer book.
2. All parts of a question should be answered consecutively. Each answer should start from a fresh page.
3. Assumptions made if any, should be stated clearly at the beginning of your answer.

Q.1. An electrical load consists of two resistors R1 and R2, having resistance of 15 ohm and 45
ohm, respectively, which are connected in parallel. This circuit is connected to a DC voltage
source of 30 V having an internal resistance of 3.75 ohm.

(b) Calculate the current through resistor R1 and the current through resistor R2. [1]
(c) Calculate the voltage across the resistor R2. [1]
(d) Calculate the power dissipated in resistor R1. [1]
(e) Calculate the energy dissipated in the resistor R2 in one minute. [1]

Q.2. Consider the circuit shown in Figure Q2.

Figure Q2

(a) Write the equations for nodal analysis of the given circuit. [2]
(b) Calculate the node voltages V1 and V2 using nodal analysis. [1]
(c) Calculate the current through 2 ohm resistor. [1]
(d) Calculate the power dissipated by 4 ohm resistor. [1]

Q.3. Consider the circuit shown in Figure Q3. The resistance, RL = 16 ohm, which is connected
across the load terminals A and B, is the load resistance.

Figure Q3
(a) Calculate Thevenin’s equivalent resistance and Thevenin’s equivalent voltage for the
circuit as seen from the load terminals A and B. [2]
(b) Calculate the load current using Thevenin’s equivalent circuit. [1]
(c) If the load resistance is replaced by a resistor of 8 ohm, calculate the load current using
Thevenin’s equivalent circuit. [1]
(d) Using Thevenin’s equivalent circuit, calculate the value of the load resistance to be
connected across the terminals A and B such that the load will absorb maximum power
from the circuit. Calculate the maximum power which can be delivered by the circuit in
such a case. [1]

Q.4. A series combination of a 4 kΩ resistor and a 250 μF capacitor is connected to a 200 V DC

supply through a switch. Initially the switch is open and the voltage across the capacitor is 0

(b) Write down the expression for the capacitor voltage using the numerical values given. [1]
(c) Calculate the voltage across the resistor and the current flowing through the circuit at
time t = 0 s (that is, just after the switch is closed). [2]
(d) Calculate the voltage across the capacitor at time, t = 2 s. [1]

Q.5. A 10 Ω resistor, a 10 mH inductor and a 100 μF capacitor are connected in series. This series
