Employee Induction Program

Employee induction is an important, but sometimes neglected part of the hiring process. It is
designed both to reduce first-day jitters and to bring newly hired employees into the fold by
familiarizing them with their jobs and general and specific company operations, policies,
procedures, and products.

The objectives of a successful induction and orientation program should be to:


 Make new-hires feel welcome and at ease in their new work environment. Giving him/her a
sense of belongingness, this will make him a useful member of the team.
 Explain what the company is about-how it originated, who its customers and competitors
are, how it differs from other organizations, what its structure, vision, values, and short- and
long-term objectives are.
 Inform new-hires about company products, operational methods, and policies and
procedures.
 Reduce the time required for new-hires to become productive on the job by ensuring that
they understand what is expected of them and how they are to do their jobs.
 Communicate benefits and other information.
 Reduce first-day jitters and anxiety by helping new-hires feel secure, welcome, and part of
an otherwise unfamiliar organization.
 Instill positive attitudes toward work and the organization.
 Promote open communication at all levels, but especially between supervisors and their
employees.
 Communicate to new employees not only what the organization offers, but also what it
expects in the way of performance and behavior.
 Provide all the basic information new employees need to perform effectively and efficiently
on the job.

General Guideline:
Part A
HR Department: Respective HoD/HR Representative
The following job to be done in HR:
 Complete Joining formalities according to the check list of joining formalities.
 HR briefing About Organization (Company History & Organization). Inform about the vision,
mission and values of the organization.
 Provide a clear picture about HR Policies & Practices (Service Conditions and employee
benefits etc.).

Joining Department: Respective Supervisor


Supervisor’s responsibilities are as follows:
 Introduction to work place, Departmental Head and fellow employees’ (Name, Designation
and work relationship).
 Departmental rules and regulations.
 Physical Facilities like seating arrangement, Work place tools, equipment, Canteen, drinking
water, notice board etc.
 Departmental activities (goals and objectives), Inform about his job responsibilities.

Part B
Departments/Units other than Joining Department:

Other department’s HoD/HoD Nominated person will provide the following information:
 About the department org chart in brief.
 General awareness of functional activities and procedures.

Part C
Follow up interview after two weeks by the supervisor:

 Ask question to know whether the employee has got the correct information. Follow the
Induction Evaluation and Feedback Questionnaire.
 Provoke the employee to ask question.
 Repeat some of the earlier information for emphasis.
 Return the entire induction form along with the filled in questionnaire to HR. Respective
HoD/Supervisor will preserve a copy with him for future reference.
