1.0 GENERAL INFORMATION
Water cooling tower is a commonly used heat transfer medium to remove heat from commercial air conditioner
and industries waste heat. In the past, the inspection and preventive maintenance schedule have been omitted and
the user waste a lot of money. Nowadays, the improvement of the skilled worker found that the important of daily
maintenance of cooling tower not only save money, but also eliminate the bacteria growth inside the tower.
RYOWO, as a Cooling Tower Manufacturer will continue to provide the best quality of products and services and
is committed to save energy and protect our surrounding.
2
2.0 BEFORE STARTING
Prior to initial start-up or after a long shut-down period, should be thoroughly inspected and cleaned.
1) Clean all debris, such as leaves and dirt from the inside of the tower, the hot water basins and the air inlet
louvers.
2) Flush the cold water sump and drain to remove accumulated dirt.
3) Remove the sump strainers and clean.
4) Turn the fan by hand to insure rotation without obstruction.
5) At seasonal start-up, adjust tension of the belt.
6) Check float operated make-up value to be sure it is operating freely.
7) Fill cold water sump with fresh water to the overflow level.
8) Adjust the float valve so that it will close when water is approximately 20mm below the overflow level.
9) Run the circulating pump for a while to release air inside the pipes and open the make-up valve
simultaneously.
10) Regulate the valve to designed flow rate and balance the flow to the hot water basins (MUTI-CELL)
11) Start the fan motor and check for proper rotation and vibration.
2.1 OPERATION
The following services should be performed wherever the cooling tower is to be shut-down for a
prolonged period
1) Isolate the power supply.
2) Drain the cold water sump and all pipes that will be exposed to freezing temperature.
3) Clean and flush the hot water and cold water basins with the sump strainers in place, leave the cold
water sump drain open, so rain and melting snow will drain from the tower.
4) Clean the sump strainers and reinstall.
5) Cover the distribution basins and fan discharge opening to keep out the dirt debris.
6) Close the shut off valves in the make-up water line and drain all exposed make-up water pipes.
3
3.0 REGULAR CHECKING
3.1 FAN
The fan blades are made of highly corrosion-resistant fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) material. The blade
surface, however, may be damaged depending on atmospheric conditions. At least, monthly checks to see if there
is no abnormalities on the blade surface is recommended, check the locking bolts for tightness every six months.
3.2 MOTOR
1) DAILY CHECH
(a) There is no unusual temperature rise or vibration
(b) No abnormal noise
(c) No burning smell
2) MONTHLY CHECK
(a) The packing of terminal box is in good condition
(b) The insulation is as specified measure the actual resistance.
3.3 FILLING
The efficient operation of the tower depends up on smooth air and water flow in the filling. It is important to
prevent scaling, algae growth etc. for a satisfactory operation. The filling should be inspected and cleaned
regularly.
For industrial applications with chemical additions should require more frequent inspection and cleaning
than air Conditioning applications.
1) For the belt drive unit, check to see if the bearings are well without any unusual noise.
2) When the belts have slackened, slide the motor with the adjusting bolts to adjust the belts tension. For belts
renewal, be sure to replace all the belts at the same time with new ones of the same length.
4
4.0 WATER TREATMENT
Cooling towers are very effective air washers. Atmospheric dust able to pass through the air inlet will enter the
circulating water system. It is because the poor quality cooled water or air pollution. Such as corrosion
case, scale and algae growth which impedes the performance of air conditioning equipments are surprisingly
increasing.
To prevent such trouble, it is not enough to depend entirely upon chemicals or equipments.
1) Make quality analysis of circulating water and supplementing water and take appropriate action to
control the quality by consulting your water treatment professor.
2) If the trouble is anticipated owing to the condensed circulating water, we recommend the use of
chemicals, periodically blow down or installation of automatic bleed off system to keep the operation
within the regulate water quality.
3) For scale and algae, clean with chemicals.
4) Use strainer or filter depending on quality and mixture of the water.
MAKE UP WATER
Loss of water from the cooling tower consists of evaporation of circulating water which removed the heat and
carry over. A minute water droplets scattered by the fan. Continued evaporation of the circulating water
results in condensation of water which may cause corrosion of the circulating system or may even cause the
formation of algae or scale. For this reason, a so-called blow-down becomes necessary which bleeds off a
part of the circulating water.
In order to replace part of the circulating water periodically or continuously, it is effective to leave the drain
valve slightly open during operation, or to let the water over flow constantly by raising the operating water
level or to change the water periodically when the water basin is cleaned.
The blow down volume differs depending on the quality of the water or the degree of hardness. In the case of
air conditioning about 0.3% blow down is usually necessary.
The make up water volume is estimated to be at about 1.3% of the circulating water flow.
5
5.0 PERFORMANCE RATING
Usually, the performance of water cooling tower depends on the following factors: Nominal water flow,
water inlet temperature, water outlet temperature, ambient W.B. temperature and air flow. Since the water
cooling tower is designed to produce a specified cold water temperature at the highest wet-bulb temperature.
During the remainder of the year, the capacity of the cooling tower is variable according the wet-bulb
temperature of inlet air. Therefore, with the water and air flows considered constant, where the inlet, outlet
water temp. and ambient W.B. temp. will be variables. Consequently, if the tower Ka is considered constant,
the performance of the cooling tower during the season can be confirmed by referring to the performance
rating curve shown in Fig.1. Comparison of the actual operation record with the performance curve time to
time during the year enables early discovery of any trouble before it develops into serious problem and thus
keeps maintaining save operation of the equipment.
Design T = 5 °C W.B. = 27 °C
Outlet temp. = 32 °C
Inlet temp. = ( 32 + 5 ) = 37°C
6
6.0 ENERGY MANAGEMENT AND NOISE REDUCTION
Usually, frequency modulation devices are used to slow the rotation of the fans to reduce the fan power
requirements in lower wet bulb seasons and low the operating noise that created by the fan in night when the air
conditioning cooling load were reduced.
