LACTOBACILLUS REUTERI

Lactobacillus reuteri is named after Gerhard Reuter, a German

microbiologist who has validated most of his career trying to understand human
intestinal microbiota with a focus on lactobacilli and bifidobacteria [1].
Lactobacillus reuteri is one of the dominant species in vertebrates such as humans,
rats, pigs and chickens [2]. This is one of the most documented probiotic species
and has been widely used as a probiotic in humans and animals. Lactobacillus
Reuteri is a well-recorded probiotic species and has been used for years as a
probiotic in humans and animals [4]. Initially, Lactobacillus reuteri was used by
humans to reduce the severity of diarrhea, prevent colic and necrotic enterecolitis,
and maintain functional mucosal barrier. One type of probiotic bacteria is well
studied which can colonize very large amounts in the body of mammals [2].

Lactobacillus reuteri has several beneficial effects that have been found.
First, it produces antimicrobial molecules such as organic acids, ethanol, and
reuteri. Second, Lactobacillus Reuteri can be beneficial for the host's immune
system. For example some Lactobacillus reuteri colonies can reduce pro-
inflammatory cytokine production while promoting the development and function
of T-cell regulators. Thirdly, with the ability to strengthen the intestinal barrier,
Lactobacillus reuteri colonies can reduce microbial translocation from the
intestinal lumen to the tissues [2]. Lactobacillus reuteri has several beneficial
effects on host health such as prevention and repair of various disorders [2]. As
Lactobacillus reuteri that has been colonized into the host GI tract can form
biofilms, efforts have been made to study the regulation of Lactobacillus reuteri
biofilm secretion and its relationship to bacterial adherence to classify the GI
epithelium [2].

Furthermore, in a human allergic intervention study, our study, using

Lactobacillus reuteri supplementation, had the most obvious effect on infant
sensitization to allergens at years of age. Lactobacillus reuteri TCC x colony
forming unit is given to pregnant women every day from the week of pregnancy
to delivery [3]. The babies continue with the same product for months and are
followed up for months. Lactobacillus reuteri may increase the effectiveness of
treatment for infantile colic and decrease crying time in two to three weeks
without causing side effects [5]. But this protective role is captured by gradual
physiological improvements. This study is limited by heterogeneity of trials and
must be carefully considered. Higher quality, multicentre randomized controlled
trials with larger samples are needed [5].
