Scopophilia

Sigmund Freud first introduced this concept in 1905 in his Three Essays on the Theory of
Sexuality. Scopophilia refers to the pleasure of looking as well as the pleasure of being looked
at.
Example of scopophilia can be seen on the new Social media platforms, as the platform for
sharing content has increased and is easily accessible to all the communities and groups. A
certain category of people have started to popularize themselves or inflate their presence on
social media by posting tons of good morning, motivating, religious posts.

The first example is of people who wish to be Instagram models. Instagram models are people
who crave for fame or have the desire to make their profile similar to famous people. These
people belong to the age group of 14-25 years and are mostly females who want to increase
their visibility by many as followers on social media. One of the ways in which these people are
trying to do so is by following hundreds to thousands of random people, waiting for those people
to follow them back and then unfollow all of them after a certain time period and this step is
repeated again and again until the ratio of their following versus followers tends to zero.

The second example is of about the people who do not care about fame but exercise the use of
social media extensively. This group of people regularly posts tons and tons of photos on the
status where the photos are removed after 24 hrs of visibility. These people embrace their
presence in the new society by posting photos in a large amount about the current or past
events that had occurred.
