3.3 Nemo Backpack batteries

Please check the latest product information and user notes for the batteries from
http://www.inspired-energy.com/.

The batteries are shipped from Keysight with between 30% and 50% rated capacity and this
provides a minimum of 6 month shelf life when stored at 25°C (77F). If the storage
temperature exceeds 25°C (77F) over the 6-month period, the shelf life will be reduced and
provisions should be made to recharge the battery periodically.
Given normal storage and usage, the user can expect the battery to deliver 80% or more of its
initial capacity after 300 charge/discharge cycles where the charge phase is CC/CV 4000mA,
16.8 +/- 0.05V and the discharge is 1320mA down to 2.9V/Cell at 25°C.
Store in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area. Disposal regulations vary for different countries.
Dispose of in accordance with local regulations or return to Keysight Finland.

3.3.1 Precautions for handling and use

• Avoid shorting the battery
• Do not immerse in water
• Do not disassemble or deform the battery
• Do not expose to fire, or dispose of in fire
• Avoid excessive physical shock or vibration
• Keep the product out of reach of children
• Only charge the battery in an approved Nemo Walker charger
• Never use a modified or damaged charger
• Use only for the specified use
• Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area
• Never use a battery that has been damaged
• 0% Cd, 0%Hg, 0%Pb
• Each battery contains <8g of equivalent Lithium

3.3.2 Discharge
Measurement duration is from 2h to ~7h depending on test configuration. Maximum
measurement duration varies depending on device configuration, operating temperature,
cellular technology, network quality, and used data protocol. Measurement duration times

17
Nemo Backpack User Guide

exclude the control PC. With hot-swappable batteries measurement can be doubled. Always
use Nemo Backpack with all three batteries in use. If only one battery is in use, it will overheat.
Furthermore, the three batteries should have equal charge levels. In other words, do not use a
nearly empty battery with fully charged batteries.

Figure 10. Battery discharge operating limits.

3.3.2.1 LCD indication

The battery can directly display the capacity information. The battery capacity is displayed as
the relative SOC. Each LCD segment represents 20 percent of the full charge capacity. The
LCD pattern definition is given in the table below. If the battery voltage is low, there will be no
LCD indication. During charge, the most significant segment will blink.

Figure 11. Batteries in Nemo Backpack.

3.3.2.2 Charging durations

• Nemo Backpack with +12VDC or AC/DC charger ~ 4 hours
• Desktop charger CH4000/ 4040 ~3.5 hours
The system has intelligent charging control which will disable charging when the system
current consumption exceeds the rated 15A maximum. This may cause extended charging
duration when system has heavy load from the measurement devices and for example is
charging the test terminal batteries.
The primary protection circuit also provides over-temperature protection and will prevent the
battery from charging at temperatures =>54°C. Once the battery temperature has cooled to
<=45°C, it will again allow charging.

When charging and measuring with the system simultaneously (for example, when
using the system inside a vehicle) it is advised to open the backpack. Otherwise the

18
Nemo Backpack User Guide

inside temperature can raise above 54°C which will prevent the batteries from
charging.

3.3.3 Low voltage indicator and battery hot swap

Nemo Backpack has a low voltage indicator that will sound a low voltage alert every ten
seconds approximately ten minutes (at 22°C) before batteries run out. When you hear the alert
the first time, it is highly recommended to end the ongoing measurement or connect the
system to a charger using either a +12V power cable with a cigarette lighter adapter (in a
vehicle) or the 110V/220V AC/DC charger.
Batteries can also be changed during a measurement, that is, hot swapped. Remove empty
batteries one at a time and replace with fully charged back-up batteries within five minutes
from the first low voltage alert. If more than five minutes has passed from the first alert, there is
the danger that power will be cut off when you remove a battery.

Please note that ten minutes is only an estimate based on the voltage of the battery.
The voltage can drop even quicker depending on the load and operating temperature.

3.3.4 Charging Nemo Backpack

1. Connect the Nemo Backpack power cable to the power connector (see Figure 12).
Adjust the plug to fit the grooves in the connector, push and turn it to the left until it
locks to place. Similarly, when you want to remove the cable connector from the
connector panel, lift and turn the grey part of the plug until it is released, and pull it up.

Figure 12. Power connector in Nemo Backpack.

2. Connect the other end of the cable to the car +12V socket.
3. It is possible to charge the Nemo Backpack and terminal batteries during
measurements and also in standby mode.

19
Nemo Backpack User Guide

The system is designed to protect the equipment from overloading. If the total current
consumption exceeds 15A, the system automatically stops charging the Li-Ion
batteries of the backpack. This may occur, for example, if both the test terminal
batteries and the backpack batteries are empty. In this case, the terminal batteries are
charged first and when the current consumption drops below 15A, the backpack
batteries are charged as well.
The primary protection circuit of the backpack batteries provides protection from
overheating and will prevent the battery from charging at temperatures above 54°C.
Once the battery temperature has cooled below 45°C, charging will resume.
3.3.4.1 Desktop chargers
Desktop chargers are optional and are not included in the standard package. The desktop
chargers can be ordered separately. Please refer to the separate user documents for the
chargers. You will find them on the Nemo Outdoor product CD and from the manufacturer’s
website http://www.inspired-energy.com.

4 Setting up the Nemo Backpack system

4.1 Starting Nemo Backpack

Prior to connecting the test devices to the system, make sure that the drivers for the
test devices have been installed. Refer to the separate Nemo Scanner User Guide
and to the Nemo Outdoor Device Configuration Guide documents for instructions. If
you purchased the laptop from Keysight, all drivers are pre-installed.

Please note that the air vents at the bottom of the backpack must not be covered or
blocked. Blocking the air flow will lead to overheating and may cause damage to the
system.

Upon your purchase of the Nemo Backpack and test devices, you will receive the system
semi-configured. This means that the data cables as well as the optional scanner have been
set up for you. A cable connects the two USB hubs, and the hubs are connected to the laptop:
from Down A (on left) to Up 1 (on right) (red line) and from Up 0 (on left) to control laptop
(green line) (see Figure 15).

However, you will need to set up and connect your test devices with Nemo Outdoor. The
following instructions will guide you through this process.

1. Open the top of the Nemo Backpack. Insert three fully charged batteries and secure
them with rubber bands.

Please note that the batteries are not fully charged when the product is delivered so
make sure to charge the batteries before use. Always insert all three batteries.
Be careful to insert the batteries the right way so that the small flag in the battery
points towards the USB hubs (see Figure 15). The battery will slide into place easily
when inserted correctly. Do not use force to avoid damage to the equipment.

2. Switch on the Nemo Backpack unit from the main power switch. The switch is located
on top of the chassis, next to the batteries (see Figure 15). When power is on, the LED
next to the switch lights up.

When power is switched on, there is a 1-2 second delay before the LED lights up
during which the system checks that the input voltage and temperature are within
operating limits (voltage between 9.5 VDC and 17 VDC, temperature below 70°C). If
the voltage and temperature are not within limits, the system will not start up.
Check the battery levels from the batteries (each battery has a LCD display). If the
batteries are not fully charged, please charge them. Refer to chapter Charging Nemo
Backpack.

3. Start your measurement laptop. Connect the USB hub to the laptop with a USB data
cable attached to the left shoulder strap (see Figure 16).

23

left shoulder strap of the backpack.

4. Also connect the optional scanner Ethernet cable. If the scanner uses a USB interface,
it is already connected to the internal USB hub. Attach the Ethernet cable to either
shoulder strap.
5. If you are starting Nemo Backpack for the first time, you will need to configure and
start phones one by one. Follow the instructions below. If you have already used
Nemo Backpack before, please go to step 6.

Please note that you will need to insert batteries to all terminals. The batteries are
delivered in their original packages.

a. Attach the test terminals to the numbered holders. Terminals and cables are secured
to the holders with elastic bands.
b. Switch on power to the first phone and only after the phone has started, connect the
data cable and switch on the hub. Wait that the driver installation is finished. Then
switch on the next phone, connect its data cable, and switch on the HUB.
Depending on the device, the USB cable is either USB-C or Micro USB model. By
default, the Nemo Backpack delivery includes Micro USB cables. If a device requiring
a USB-C cable is included in the delivery, the cable will be preinstalled to the USB
hub.

24
Nemo Backpack User Guide

c. If you are measuring with nine terminals, connect four or five devices to both USB
hubs.

If the main power of the backpack is turned on prior to turning on the test handsets
already connected with the USB data cable, the control PC does not recognize the
test devices. In this case, disconnect/reconnect the USB data cable(s) from the control
PC.

6. Switch on the test terminals. Terminals and cables are secured to the holders and side
pockets with elastic bands.

Figure 17. Nemo Backpack terminal holders.

7. Connect the data cables to the test terminals one by one. Wait that the driver
installation is finished before connecting another device.
8. If you purchased a scanner with Nemo Backpack, the scanner is pre-installed in the
Nemo Backpack chassis. See the Nemo Scanner Guide and Nemo FSR1 User

panels from the assembly. To do this, you will need a Torx key (size TX20). The key is
included in the Nemo Backpack delivery.

When tightening the Torx screws, the torque should be below 7Nm.

6.1 Connecting a scanner to the system in the field

Different scanners are connected to the system differently. If a scanner is ordered afterwards
and needs to be connected to the system in the field, see instructions below.
• PCTEL scanners are connected to the hub with a USB cable.
• All other scanners have an Ethernet cable which must be routed from the backpack to
the control PC.

1. Push the scanner to the bottom of the rack from the side.
2. Power supply of the scanner will be on the right side of the rack.
3. Place the scanner to the centre of the rack. Fasten the scanner with velcro making
sure that cabling does not get stuck under the scanner. Make sure that the scanner is
fastened securely.

7 Troubleshooting

7.1 Issue with hub downstream USB port power

The USB hub occasionally leaves the hub downstream USB port power off when the hub is
started after a long period of being powered down.

Please download the Acroname software package from here:

https://acroname.com/system/files/software/brainstem_dev_kit_mswindows_i386_1.zip

After unzipping the file, you will find a tool called Hubtool under the /bin folder which will allow
you to connect to the hub and check the status of each port. With the Hubtool you can switch
on each individual port and save the configuration.

7.2 Error with six or more USB devices

With new laptops an error may occur when six or more USB devices are connected to the
laptop.
The current of the USB hub used by the laptop exceeds the max. value per device and the
driver blocks additional devices. This applies especially to the USB 3.0 host controllers based
on the Intel chipset.
The issue can be fixed by uninstalling the Intel USB 3.0 host controller driver.

Note that especially with Lenovo computers, the driver is automatically installed with
system updates. Automated updates should be disabled.
