1. hand in = give something to someone

Did you hand in your homework on time?

2. attach = fasten or connect one object to another

Attach a photograph to your application form.

3. forbid ( forbid – forbade – forbidden – forbidding ) = is not allowed to

do / must not do something

His doctor has forbidden him to drink alcohol.

It is forbidden to say such things.

He was forbidden to leave the house, as a punishment.

4. reserve = arrange for a place in a hotel, restaurant ,plane to be kept

for you to use at a particular time in the future

I’d like to reserve a table for two.

Do you have to reserve tickets in advance ?


5. try on = put on a piece of clothing to see if it fits you , especially in a

shop

Meg was trying on some red sandals.

6. stock = if a ship stocks a particular product, it keeps a supply of it to

sell

We stock a wide range of kitchen equipment.

7. suit = clothes, colours that suit you make you look attractive

That coat really suits Paul.

Red suits you.

Jill’s new hairstyle doesn’t really suit her.

8. dial = press the button

I think I dialed the wrong number.

9. specialized = trained, designed, or developed for a particular purpose/

type of work / place etc

10. specialize = limit all of your study, business to a particular activity

11. launch = start something, usually something big or important

The book launched his career as a writer.

launch = make a new product, book etc available for sale for the first

12. take place =happen

The next meeting will take place on Thursday.

13. attend = go regularly to school

I am the first child in my family to attend college.

14. organize = make the necessary arrangement so that an activity can

happen effectively

Students need to learn how to organize their work.

15. look out = search for and find a particular thing among your

possessions

I will look out some of my old books for you.

16. extra = more of something

Could you get an extra loaf of bread?

I asked for an extra two weeks to finish the work.

17. efficient = if something/ someone is efficient, they work well without

wasting time, money or energy

18. tiny = extremely small

The earrings are tiny.

19. unusual = different from what is usual or normal

It’s unusual for Dave to be late.

We had snow in May. It is very unusual.

20. plain = simple = without anything added or without decoration

21. crowded = too full of people or things

27. plenty of = a large quantity that is enough

There is plenty to do and see in New York.

There are plenty of chairs in the next room.

“ plenty of” can be used before an uncountable noun or a plural noun.

Do not say “a plenty of”.

You will have plenty of opportunities to improve your skills.

Do not say ‘There is plenty of places….”

Say “There are plenty of things…”

There are plenty of restaurants nearby.

28. fairly = more than a little, but much less than very

The house has a fairly large garden.

She speaks English fairly well.

29. especially = particularly

I never liked long walks, especially in winter.

Art books are expensive to produce, especially if they contain color

illustrations.

30. possibly = perhaps = maybe

This last task is possibly the most difficult.

31. as soon as = immediately after something happens, without delay

As soon as she entered the room, she knew there was something wrong.

32. at times = sometimes

Life is hard at times.

33. in time = before the time which it is necessary for something to be

35. up to = as much as a certain amount , but not more

There is a wide selection to choose from.

48. pocket money = a small amount of money

possible
