ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

I would like to express my deep and sincere gratitude

to my teacher and guide Mrs. Shubhra Das Ma’am for giving
me this opportunity and providing guidance throughout the
preparation of my work. I am greatly indebted to her for
providing the valuable guidance at all stages of the study, her
advice, constructive suggestions, positive and supportive
attitude and continuous encouragement, without which it
would not been possible to complete the topic for seminar.
I would like to thanks to my parents and friends
also, who helped me to complete this Seminar Report on
“ROAD PAVEMENT OF PLASTIC WASTE” Without their help
and inspiration, I wouldn't be able to complete this Report.
I perceive this opportunity as a big milestone in my
career development. I will strive to use my skill and
knowledge in the best possible way and I will continue to
work on my improvement in order to attain desired career
objectives.

(iii)
INTRODUCTION
 Plastic waste is increasing due to increase in population,
urbanization and development.
 Burning of these waste plastic causes pollution.
 The disposal of waste plastic has become a serious
problem globally due to their non-biodegradability.
 Plastic roads mainly use plastic carry bags, disposable cups
and bottles that are collected from garbage dumps.
 India’s consumption of Plastics will grow 15 million tonnes
by 2015* and is set to be the third largest consumer of
plastics in the world.
 Plastics can be divided in to two major categories:
thermoset and thermoplastics
 Laboratory studies proved that waste plastic Enhances /
Improves the properties of bituminous mix .
 It is better solution for disposal in an useful way.
 When mixed with hot bitumen, plastics melt to form an
oily coat over the aggregate and the mixture is laid on the
road surface like a normal tar road.
(iv)
NEED OF STUDY
 Intensity of the traffic is increasing.
 Need of better quality of road pavement.
 Disposal of waste plastic is a major
problem.
 Waste plastic bags causes environmental pollution.
 Plastic takes 400 years and even more to
Decompose.
IMPACT OF PLASTIC WASTES ON OUR ENVIROMENT
PLASTIC ROAD

(vi)

PLASTIC ROAD

Plastic road mainly use plastic carry-

bags, disposable cups and plastic
bottles that are melted to form an oily
coat over the aggregate and the mixture
is laid on the road surface like a normal
tar road.
(vii)

MATERIAL USED
AGGREGATES
 The aggregate used for road work should be hard, tough,
durable and hydrophobic for bituminous surface.
 The size of aggregates should be 2 cm to 4.36 cm.

BITUMEN
Bitumen is used as binders in pavements constructions.
(viii)
WASTE PLASTIC
 The most used plastics/polymer materials are
polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene etc.
 Around 130-140˚C they get softened without releasing
any gaseous products.
 Various analysis has shown that there is no gas evolution
in the temperature range of 130-180°C.
(ix)

BASIC PROCESS BEFORE

USING PLASTIC
 Segregation
 Cleaning process
 Shredding process
 Collection process

SEGREGATION
 Plastic waste collected from various sources must be
separated from other waste.
 Maximum thickness of 60 microns.
(X)

CLEANING PROCESS
 Plastic waste get cleaned and dried.

SHREDDING PROCESS
 Then different types of plastic wastes are mixed together.
 Shredded or Cut into small piece.
(xi)

COLLECTION PROCESS
The plastic waste retaining in 2.36 mm is collected.
(xii)
METHOD OF MIXING

 DRY PROCESS
 WET PROCESS

DRY PROCESS
 This process is developed by Dr. Vasudevan.
 The aggregate is heated to 170°C in the Mini hot Mix Plant.
 The shredded plastic waste is added in equal
proportion.
WASTE PLASTICS MIXED WITH THE HOT AGGREGATES

 This plastics gets coated over the aggregate

uniformly.
 Immediately the hot Bitumen at 160°C is added with the
mixture.
 The mixture is transferred to the road and the road is laid.
(xiii)
WET PROCESS
 Waste plastics by direct mixing with hot bitumen at 160°C.
 Mechanical stirrer is needed.
 Since the wet process require a lot of investment and
bigger plants so not commonly used.

CHARACTERISTIC OF PLASTICS
COATED AGGREGATE
Los Angel’s Abrasion Test –
Wear and tear values of plastic coated aggregate if found to be
decreasing while using plastics.
Eg. 37% without plastic, 32% with 1% plastic, 29% with 2%
plastic.

Soundness Test -
The plastic coated aggregate, did not show any weight loss,
hence improve the quality of the aggregate.

(xiv)
ADVANTAGES
 Simple process, no new machinery is required.
 Use higher percentage of plastic waste. Reduce the
need of bitumen by around 10%.
 Increase the strength and performance of the road.
 Reduce the cost to around Rs. 5000/Km. of single
lane road.
 Generate jobs for rag pickers.
 Develop a technology, which is eco-friendly, no toxic
gas evaluation.
 Reduced penetration and ductility, a higher softening
point, resist the permeation of water and cold cracking.

(xv)
DISADVANTAGES

 Cleaning process
Toxics present in the co-mingled plastic waste would start leaching.

 During the road laying process

In the presence of chlorine will definitely release noxious HCL gas.

 After the road laying

The components of the road, once it has been laid, are not inert.

(xvi)
DEVELOPMENTS

 The office of the chief minister, New Delhi has a given a

green signal to a private company for supply of bitumen
mixed with plastic which is used for construction of roads.
 The company has already constructed a two-km road in
Bangalore with bitumen mixed with plastic.
 The government of Karnataka was pleased by the success
of the experiment and the state chief minister himself
inaugurated the field test of construction 500 m of road in
three places in and around Bangalore with the help of
PWD using the innovative technology.

(xvii)
CONCLUSION
 Roads laid with plastic waste mix are found to be better
than the conventional ones.
 Plastic will increase the melting point of the bitumen.
 Rainwater will not seep through because of the plastic in
the tar. So, this technology will result in lesser road
repairs.
 Use of the innovative technology not only strengthened
the road construction but also increased the road life.
 Help to improve the environment.
 Plastic road would be a boon for India’s hot and extremely
humid climate where durable and eco-friendly road is
required.
