4 General Description

The NANT-E NT board is responsible for:

• the routing/switching and the aggregation of end-user data streams to and from
network interfaces and/or uplink interfaces.
• all the management and alarm handling functions for:
• the ISAM subrack itself
• all the client devices in the ISAM subrack or connected to the ISAM subrack
• System clock generation
• supports a cut-through mode for the system clock, i.e. it can receive and relay the
system clock (generated by another BITS/SyncE capable NT).
• Centralized shelf alarm handling and reporting (Alarm Control Unit (ACU)
functionality).

The LT boards are responsible for the physical termination of user interfaces and non-
blocking user aggregation.
The NANT-E board must be used at the NT-A and/or the NT-B position of the ISAM
FD subrack. Figure 1 shows the position of the NANT-E in the ISAM system.

The different functional blocks are:

• CISC:
The Centralized ISAM System Controller (CISC) Implements all On-Board
Controller (OBC) functions which accommodate a centralized Control and
Management approach of the complete ISAM shelf and provides the necessary
processing capabilities for Ethernet packets/frames forwarded to the main OBC from
the GE switching module.
• MCSD:
The Master Clock Synchronization and Distribution (MSCD) provides the following
functionality:
• System Network Timing Reference (NTR).
• Synchronization Output reference clocks towards:
- The shelf-based LT boards (backplane connections): 8 kHz.
- The internal NTR signal from the active NT board to the standby NT board in
a redundant NT board pair (backplane connection): 8 kHz.
- The external NTR daisy-chain interface (located at the NT board front): 8 kHz.

Combined NT Unit version E NANT-E

• ACU:
The Alarm Control Unit (ACU) provides all the necessary alarm control and interface
circuitry for accumulating system alarms, driving relay contacts for alarm outputs
and provisioning visual alarm indications.
• NUTS:
The Network/User Transport and Switching (NUTS) provides the interface and
switching circuitry for the front and back related uplink/network interfaces to/from
the LT slots.
• PSIM:
The Power Supply Interface Module (PSIM) converts the rack power supply into all
necessary voltages as required by the used components.
• FIM:
The Frontplate Interface Module (FIM) located at the front stiffener holds the
physical interfaces (four SFP+, one 10/100/1000Base-T interface) together with a
visual port status indication. The FIM also hosts a Management Interface (CRAFT)
together with the ACO functionality.
• BIM:
The Backplane Interface Module (BIM) constitutes all the necessary control,
management, and data plane related interface inside the complete ISAM system.
