PROJECT: CONSTRUCTION OF WAMI CANTILVER BRIDGE IN TANZANIA

DESIGN OF END BLOCK Page 1

DESIGN OF END BLOCK Page 2
DESIGN OF END BLOCK REINFORCEMENT

Cable type 19 K15

Jacking force= 3770 kN
As per cl 6.7.5 of BS5400 part 4 and 4.11 of 8110-1:1997, End block bursting design has been done .

2Ypo 2Yo

2Yo

As per Table 30 Fbst=Pi(0.32-0.3Ypo/Yo)

Size of anchor plate 290 x290 mm
Size of Concrete rectangle
L= 450 mm
B=450 mm
Associated rectangle area=450*450 =20250 sqmm
Jacking force= 1*3770= 3770 kN

DESIGN OF END BLOCK Page 3

A)Bursting force
2Ypo=290 mm(steel anchorage plate size) and 2 Yo=450 mm ( vertical dimension of concrete block)
Length of concrete Block=2Yo=450 mm (for the size of anchor block please see the below diagram)

Ypo/Yo=0.64 from the table 30 of BS5400 part 4

Fbst/Po=0.155
As per HYSD grade 460 ; fbs=0.8*460=400 Mpa
However fbs shall be limited to 200 Mpa as per 4.11.2 of BS8110-1:1997
Fbst/Po=0.155
Fbst=Po x0.155==(0.155*1*3770*1000)=584350 N
Abst=area of Bursting steel= Fbst/fbs sqmm
Abs=(584350/200)=2922 sqmm.
Provide as a hoop reinforcement in each anchorage with 16 mm dia bars at a pitch of 60 mm
Area provided at each anchorage=(450/60)*2*201=3015 sqmm.
Provided reinforcement 3015>2922 sqmm hence OK
However provide spiral of length 600 mm.

DESIGN OF END BLOCK Page 4

B)Spalling Reinforcement
Spalling reinforcement as per EN 1992.2- 2005 annexure J is pt=3% of Jacking force
Ast=0.03*Pjack/fyd*p,unfav
p,unfav=1.2
Fyd=400 mpa, however has been taken as 200 MPa
Ast required =0.03*3770*1000/200*1.2=678 sqmm
Therefore provide reinforcement as stirrups around the Concrete block in the prism depth.ie 450 mm

Provide 20mm dia 2 legged vertical stirrups two nos in a row and

a 20 mm dia two legged loop stirrup around.

Ast provided= 4*314*450/150=3668 =3668 sqmm-bar mark 4 and

Ast provided=2*314*450/150=1884*1=1884 sqmm-bar mark 3

Provided reinforcement >678 sqmm OK

Skin Reinforcement

In addition bar mark 2 in longitudinal directions at 100 mm c/c as skin reinforcement .

Ast=450/100*314= 1413 sqmm -bar mark 2

DESIGN OF END BLOCK Page 5

D)CHECK FOR COMPRESSIVE STRESS

As per BS5400-4 :1990

Allowable compressive stress arrived from below, whichever is less

fca= 1.5fci

[1+sqrt(Acon/Asup)]

=33 mpa where fci=36 mpa strength of concrete after 7days

Where fci=compressive strength of concrete after ’i’ th day in Mpa

fca=allowable compressive strength of concrete in Mpa

Acon=Contact area in sqmm=290*290=84100 sqmm

Asup=Support area in sqmm =450*450=202500 sqmm

fca=33 mpa<36 mpa (Compressive strength of concrete cube at jacking=36 mpa) Hence OK

Actual stress generated=Pk/Asup=3770*1000/202500= 18.61 mpa <33 mpa, say OK

DESIGN OF FOR FUTURE PRESTRESSING DEVIATOR BLOCK

DRAWINGS :TANR/WAMI BRIDGE/SUP-05(SHEET 1TO9)

Future prestressing force

As there are no specific guidelines for Future prestressing provision , Consider minimum two at top and
two at bottom cable ducts/deviators during construction.

Even higher number also not possible to provide, in case of emergency external steel anchorages shall
be provided.

Type cables:

Provide 19 K15 type cables passing through the cable.

End Deviator Block Design for future prestressing

Assume there is an inclination of 14 degree.

Size of block is 450*350 to 450*550 at anchorage in a length of 1000 mm, as shown in the drawings.

Reinforcement provided same as normal Anchorage block.

Provide T 20 vertical bars 11 nos in a length of 1000mm

Provide T20 horizontal stirrups 3 nos

Provide longitudinal reinforcement T20 at 100 mm c/c

Intermediate deviator blocks

Size =200*350*300 blocks shown in drawings in each segment.

As there is no force transfer through these blocks minimum reinforcement is provided

Provide min 0.12 % reinforcement as there is no force transfer.

Provide T12 mm stirrup bars in both vertical, horizontal and longitudinal directions.
