Lesson Plan in Mathematics (Grade 8)

I. Learning Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. Derive the quadratic formula from the general form of quadratic equation
2. Identify the steps in finding the roots of quadratic equations using quadratic
formula
3. Solve quadratic equations using quadratic formula
II. Content: Finding roots of quadratic equation using quadratic formula
III. Learning Resources
Materials: Book, chalk/marker, board, colored papers
Reference: EASE Module Second year Quadratic Equations, Module 3
Chapter 2 Quadratic Equations pp. 47-53(LM)
IV. Procedures
A. Preliminary/Motivation
The class will be divided into three groups. Their task is to find the words
and the quadratic formula written in colored papers that are hidden in the classroom.
The first group should be able to find the word “Quadratic”, the second group should be
able to find the word “Formula” and the third group should find the formula. Every group
will be given a riddle that pertains to the place where the words can be located. The
students are not yet aware of what the words and the formula are. In each place where
the words and the formula are hidden, there are 2 envelopes that contain the wrong
words and formulas while the 3 rd envelope contains the right one. There’s a written
number problem outside the 3 envelopes. The students’ duty is to solve for it and the
problem that will come up with an answer of 1 is the right envelope.
B. Presentation of the topic
What are the two words that you found during the game? What is the
formula that you found?

V. Evaluation
1. How can we derive the quadratic formula from the general form of quadratic
equation?
2. Show the steps in finding the roots of a quadratic equation using quadratic
formula?
3. Solve x2-11+30= 0 using quadratic formula.

2. x2+4x+3=0
3. 2x2-15x=0
4. 2x2+7x+5=0
5. x2-10x+21=0

VII. Remarks
The discussion wasn’t able to cover all the topics included in the lesson plan
because the time intended was not enough. The only objective that was attained was
the derivation of the quadratic formula. The continuation of the lesson will be discussed
next meeting.

VIII. Reflection
The preliminary made the students became energized and prepared for the
discussion or lesson proper. The inquiry-based method that was used in developing the
lesson helped the teacher to bring success on imparting the knowledge to the students.
The inquiry-based method made the students became more active because it was seen
on their performance. Therefore, the same method may be used for the discussion next
meeting.
