SEMESTER 2 2019/2020
EXAM (TAKE HOME, OPEN BOOK)

Please submit by uploading to Spectrum (look for “Final Exam”) within 30 minutes after
the exam is due.
Total points: 60
Question 1 (25 points)

Consider a bar described by the following strong form:

𝑑 𝑑𝑢
− 𝐸𝐴 = 𝑓, 𝑥 ∈ (𝑎, 𝑏)
𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑥
𝑑𝑢
𝑢(𝑎) = 𝑔; 𝐸 (𝑏) = ℎ
𝑑𝑥

(a) State the smoothness requirement for the solution of the strong form.

(b) Assume a uniform discretization of N linear elements, how many shape functions
are there? Sketch the global view and the local view of the shape functions. Why
are these basis function?

(c) State B and the missing terms in the brackets contained in the following
expression of the element stiffness matrix emanating from the weak form.

𝐤 = 𝐁 ( )( ) 𝑑𝑥

(d) Evaluate the element stiffness matrix with the following stiffness using Gauss
quadrature. Is the integration exact? What is the jacobian?

2 1
𝐸𝐴(𝑥) = + 𝑥 , 𝑥 = 1.0, 𝑥 = 2.0

Question 2 (35 points)

Consider the composite cylinder shown in Fig Q2.

Fig Q2
Assume the following:
16 in = 400 mm; 6 in2 = 3870 mm2; 4 in2 = 2580 mm2; 8 in2 = 5160 mm2; 2000 lb = 9 kN;
2500 lb = 12 kN.
E for steel = 200 GPa;
E for aluminium = 70 GPa;
E for brass = 100 GPa.
(Note: use three linear elements)

(a) State the strong form (S) and the corresponding weak form (W). (Optional, you
may skip)

(b) Establish the matrix form (M) by using the parent domain for computation.
Indicate clearly the implementation of the essential boundary condition.

(c) Evaluate the normal forces and stresses in each section. Use LU decomposition.
State the L and U matrices.

(d) Describe the treatment of nonhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition.

Establish the matrix form (M) for the case of 𝑔 = −10 𝑚𝑚.
