Assignment (20% of continuous assessment)

[OP] Ottosen & Petersson

[PP] Peter Pinsky

1. [OP] Derive the stiffness matrix for the system of discrete springs shown in Fig 3.8. Show the
free body diagram for each element of spring. Solve for the nodal unknown using LU
decomposition. Assume the following:

𝑘 = 𝑘 = 𝑘 = 𝑘 = 𝑘 = 1000 ; 𝑘 = 2𝑘; 𝑢 = 𝑢 = 0; 𝐹 = 𝐹 = 100 𝑁; 𝐹 = 2𝐹

Use the LU in Matlab to compare your answers.

2. [OP] For the truss system shown in Fig 3.14, solve for the displacements. Take the applied
force as 𝐹 = −𝐹, 𝐹 = 2𝐹.

3. [OP] Derive the weak form (W) corresponding to the strong form (S) for the one-
dimensional heat conduction problem as indicated in Eqn (4.8-4.10). Present the step
involving integration by parts (ibp) clearly. State the constitutive law for this problem. What
is the physical parameter that would appears in the expression for stiffness matrix that
emanates from (W)?

4. Assuming discretization using linear element for 1-d problem. Sketch and write the
expression for the shape function for (i) global point of view; (ii) element point of view. Also
express the corresponding expression in the parent domain and the value of the Jacobian
involved in the coordinate transformation.

5. [PP] Refer to p.36. Work out Example 4.1 – 4.3.

6. [OP] Set up the matrix form (M) for the problem in Sec 9.1.1, p.164. Use the parent domain
for the evaluation of all relevant quantities. Pay attention to the contributions from both
the Dirichlet / essential and the Neumann / natural boundary conditions.

7. LU factorization. Show the matrix form (M) in #6 using LU factorization. Explicit state the
form of L and U matrices.
