Chapter 18 Speed of Reaction
18.4 – DBQ
1 An excess of zinc carbonate was added to 100 cm 3 of 0.02 M dilute sulfuric acid. The
volume of gas produced at room conditions was measured every 30 seconds. The results
are shown in the table:
(a) Plot, on the graph paper provided, the volume of gas produced against time. [2]
(b) (i) Using the graph plotted in (a), describe and explain how the speed of reaction
varies as the reaction proceeds.

(c) The experiment was repeated using dilute nitric acid of the same concentration and
volume.
(i) Sketch, on the same axes, the graph you would expect from this experiment. [1]
(ii) Comment on the difference, if any, in the two graphs. Explain your answers.

(b) (i) At the beginning of the reaction, there is maximum amount of reactant
present for high frequency of effective collision.
Speed of reaction is very fast, 23cm3 produced for first 30s
As the reaction proceeds, lesser reactants are present, lesser
frequency of effective collision occurs.
Speed of reaction decreases, 14cm3 of gas produced for next 30s.
When the limiting reactant (acid) is used up, the eventually reaction
stops
No more gas produced from 180s onwards
[4m for all 6 points, 3m for 5 points, 2m for 3-4 points, 1m for 2 points]
(ii) 48cm3
(c) (ii) Sulfuric acid is dibasic, while nitric acid is monobasic, given the same
concentration and volume of acid used, number of hydrogen ions
produced from nitric acid would be half of that of sulfuric acid. [1]
Lesser hydrogen ions present per unit volume, hence initial speed of
production for nitric acid is thus much slower. [1]
Based on equation,
Mole ratio H2SO4 : CO2 is 1 : 1
Mole ratio HNO3 : CO2 is 2 : 1[1]
[alternatively, students can show via calculations]
Given the same volume and concentration of acid, the volume of gas
produced by nitric acid will be half that of sulfuric acid. [1]
